In Bad Belzig, several travel highlights sit side by side: the panoramic hiking trail leads to Eisenhardt Castle and through varied landscapes, while the nature discovery trail is shorter. There is also the history of the castle and town church, as well as the facilities at the SteinTherme. Bad Belzig is in the Hoher Fläming Nature Park. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider hiking, local history and relaxation as separate priorities.
Hiking trails and landscapes in the Hoher Fläming
The panoramic hiking trail in Bad Belzig is 17.7 kilometres long. It leads to Eisenhardt Castle, perched on a mountain spur above the historic old town, and follows the Belziger Bach stream. The route also includes the Belziger Berge hills, forests, flowering meadows, open countryside and the historic town centre with its winding lanes. The trail thus combines landscapes and townscapes along a single route. As route conditions can change, check the current route before setting out.
The nature discovery trail is just under two kilometres long and runs along the wet meadows at the foot of Eisenhardt Castle. It is therefore much shorter than the panoramic hiking trail. At its twelve stations, you can make stones ring, observe dragonflies, feel plants and open large acorns, among other activities. The stations offer different ways to engage with the surroundings; their content may change over time.
There is also a dense network of hiking trails around Bad Belzig, Eisenhardt Castle and the SteinTherme. Nine terrain therapy trails pass sights along the way and are marked “TK” on the signage. The marking helps you identify this group of routes while finding your way.
In the wider destination of Potsdam-Mittelmark, the 148-kilometre Burgenwanderweg (Castle Trail) crosses the entire Hoher Fläming Nature Park and connects four castles in the region. Its route passes through Bad Belzig and Wiesenburg. This regional route adds a longer-distance option to the local hiking opportunities.
Castle and local history
In the wider destination of Potsdam-Mittelmark, Eisenhardt Castle above Bad Belzig is considered a cultural landmark and allows visitors to experience the Middle Ages first-hand. The local history museum in the castle covers three millennia of local history. In the “Hagelberg Room,” it features a large pewter-figure diorama depicting the 1813 Battle of Hagelberg. Alongside the museum’s broad historical scope, a specific historical event takes centre stage.
St. Mary’s Church in Bad Belzig offers a different perspective on the town’s history. It is Romanesque in its core and was built in the second half of the 13th century. Its architectural history complements the museum exhibits with an example of medieval architecture in the town centre.
SteinTherme and regional cuisine
The SteinTherme offers a bathing world, a sauna world, and wellness and beauty facilities. This provides another travel highlight alongside hikes and historical attractions.
Since summer 2024, the Burgwirtschaft restaurant at Eisenhardt Castle has been serving regional specialities. If you plan to visit the Burgwirtschaft, please check in advance whether it is currently open.
The trail lengths make it easy to choose your focus: the panoramic hiking trail covers 17.7 kilometres, while the nature discovery trail is just under two kilometres long. Those with a stronger interest in history will find both the local history museum at Eisenhardt Castle, with its broad historical scope, and the diorama depicting the 1813 battle; the town church adds another historical highlight with its Romanesque structure. The SteinTherme complements these options with bathing and sauna facilities.
