Michendorf combines experiences in nature with a clear cycling option and cultural discoveries in town. The municipality lies amid forests, meadows and lakes on the edge of Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park. This offers distinct options for outdoor activities, local history and architecture.

Cycling and Hiking

The “Erlebnis” cycling tour around Michendorf starts and ends in Michendorf and covers 38 kilometres. Starting and finishing in the same place, as well as the route length, give the tour a concrete framework for planning your day. Michendorf’s location in the Nuthe-Nieplitz Lowlands Nature Park also makes the municipality a starting and finishing point for longer hikes and cycling tours. If you prefer to get around on foot, you can also make hiking a focus of your travel plans in Michendorf.

A second cycling idea has a seasonal focus: the “Schlemmer” cycling tour is intended for asparagus season, from April to June. While the “Erlebnis” tour is defined by its length and start and end point, the “Schlemmer” tour is tied to this period. You should check the specific farms and their availability separately.

Local History Museum and Half-Timbered Church

The Michendorf Local History Museum is housed in the old mill building on Wolkenberg. Under the motto “Tracing the Past in Michendorf,” historical photographs, objects and documents from families, trades, commerce, businesses, associations and other sources are displayed across several floors. The topics therefore range from personal and professional records to commerce and association life.

The Michendorf church is a small half-timbered church with its own friendly character and dates back to 1743. Its architectural style and the museum collection displayed across several floors offer different points of focus within the local cultural scene: architecture here, historical material there.

The Lake District and Lake Hertha

There is an important restriction to keep in mind regarding the lakes: swimming is not permitted in Lake Hertha; it is not a bathing lake. Lake Hertha is preserved as a biotope and may not be entered.

Potsdam-Mittelmark on a Larger Scale

The wider travel destination of Potsdam-Mittelmark offers other distinct cultural and hiking themes. Above Bad Belzig stands Eisenhardt Castle, a cultural landmark that allows visitors to experience the Middle Ages at first hand. Ziesar Castle was an important episcopal residence in the Middle Ages and impresses with its well-preserved architecture; visitors can immerse themselves in the religious and political history of Potsdam-Mittelmark here. Reckahn Palace is dedicated to the life and work of the Prussian reformer Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow; the permanent exhibition “Reason for the People” began there in 2001. The 148-kilometre Castle Hiking Trail offers a different scale: it runs through the entire Hoher Fläming Nature Park and connects the region’s four castles. The EuroVelo Route R1 also passes through Potsdam-Mittelmark, crossing scenic landscapes and historic towns.

For an asparagus-themed outing, the Beelitz Asparagus Road offers a different regional perspective from Michendorf’s seasonal “Schlemmer” cycling tour: it connects the asparagus farms in the districts of the town of Beelitz and can be followed by car as well as on cycling and hiking trails. As the signposting may change, you should check it before planning your trip.
