In Bensdorf, mill history, agricultural production and the landscape along the Old Canal near Woltersdorf offer distinct ways to explore the area. The history of Gut Herrenhölzer and a nature theme along the canal add to the picture. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether architectural history, regional produce or the landscape interests you most.

Mill History and Holiday Apartments

The two restored holiday apartments are on the top floor of the 1912 residential building. Check availability before making plans, as it may change. The 20-ton mill was the largest mill in the former Jerichow II district. In 1935, a grain silo with a capacity of 1,000 tonnes was built at the Bensdorf Mill. It measures 12 by 12 metres and is 32 metres high. These figures give a concrete sense of the mill’s scale and history. A historic windmill associated with the Bensdorf Mill stood on Mühlenberg, now the cemetery, at the highest elevation.

The Bensdorf Mill’s outdoor café serves freshly prepared homemade food made with regional products. Café hours and offerings may change; check both if they are important to your visit. The range includes rye and wheat baking meal, wholemeal flour and various types of rye flour. This selection may also vary.

Gut Herrenhölzer and Regional Produce

At Gut Herrenhölzer, history and agriculture come together: it was first mentioned in 1782 as part of an estate. Gut Herrenhölzer grows asparagus, strawberries and blueberries, and offers these products seasonally. Green and white asparagus are grown on 160 square metres; blueberries on around five hectares. The growing areas may change, and availability depends on the harvest and the season.

The loamy sandy soils in Bensdorf’s districts are considered favourable for growing asparagus. If you are interested in regional production, you can consider the soil conditions and a specific crop here together. The farm shop offers regional products such as fruit spreads, pasta, homemade sausage or ham, and regional waffles. The selection may change, particularly with the seasons.

The Old Canal and the Landscape

The Old Canal near Woltersdorf was built as a shipping route in the mid-18th century. The forests and floodplains along the canal support diverse animal and plant life. Historical use and nature come together here: you can combine the former waterway’s history with views of the landscape along the water. The Old Canal is also considered a destination for anglers and nature lovers.

The Brandenburger Wald- und Seengebiet landscape conservation area also includes land within the Bensdorf cadastral area. Its purpose includes promoting nature-friendly recreation, particularly around bodies of water and in forests. If you want to plan specifically around the protected area’s boundary, check the current status; legal changes may affect its boundaries.
