A 1,000-horsepower Deutz diesel engine is an unusual attraction at the Funkerberg Museum: you can see it in action during regular demonstrations. The museum is located at the authentic site of Germany’s first radio broadcast. On December 22, 1920, a Christmas concert was broadcast from Königs Wusterhausen. The dated broadcast and the engine demonstrations offer different points of interest: one is a specific event from 1920, the other is technology in motion. Check the current demonstration dates before your visit. Together with the Spreewald, the Dahme Lake District is part of the travel region in the district of Dahme-Spreewald, which offers scenic, historical and cultural attractions.
History and Architecture
In Mittenwalde, the Salzmarkt 5 Museum tells the city’s history, spanning more than 700 years, in a restored half-timbered house. Guided town tours introduce you to this historic farming town; sights include St. Moritz Church and the local history museum. Advance registration and a minimum group size are required for the tours. The tower of St. Moritz Church has viewing platforms at a height of around 50 metres; reaching them involves climbing about 200 steps. Check the access conditions before your visit. Königs Wusterhausen Palace can only be visited on a guided tour. You’ll learn about the life and royal living quarters of Frederick William I, as well as his era; check the tour dates in advance. In Bestensee, the fieldstone church is an example of a medieval village church; it was probably built towards the end of the 14th century.
Schlepzig: Farmhouse and Waterways
The Schlepzig Farm Museum is housed in a completely preserved ensemble of farm buildings dating from 1818. The faithfully furnished farmhouse depicts small-scale farming life. Schlepzig harbour is the starting point for boat or canoe trips on a three-kilometre circular route through the Spreewald village. Trips may operate seasonally; check current options before making plans. The museum focuses on farm life at home, while the circular route offers a view of the village from the water—two different ways to experience Schlepzig.
Nature at Different Scales
The Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park lies in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree and encompasses more than 100 lakes. The Buchenhain nature trail leads to a seven-metre-high observation tower with views of the surrounding area. In the district of Dahme-Spreewald, more than 1,000 kilometres of well-developed, fully signposted cycle paths connect landscapes and destinations in the Spreewald and the Dahme Lake District. Check current route conditions when planning cycling trips. At Buchenhain, the focus is on a single viewpoint, while the cycle paths connect a variety of landscapes and destinations.
The Bigger Picture: Brandenburg
In the broader travel destination of Brandenburg, Spreewald gherkins are a particularly renowned regional product. Brandenburg has more than 30,000 kilometres of waterways; you can go canoeing on the rivers and sailing on the lakes. The wider regional picture thus ranges from culinary specialities to water-based activities.
