Luckau combines a fully preserved city wall with a historic town center characterized by Baroque gabled houses. The wall is about 1.8 km long, encloses the old town and is ideal for a walk. This offers a hands-on introduction to the city’s history on foot; the museum, church and guided tours add their own perspectives.
History at the Niederlausitz Museum
The Niederlausitz Museum is housed in a former Dominican monastery, which was later used as a prison and is associated with inmates such as Karl Liebknecht. The permanent exhibition “Luckau – Gateway to Lower Lusatia. People, Culture, Nature.” explores the diverse development of Luckau and its surroundings. Here, the history of the building meets the development of the city and its wider area.
The museum offers interactive audio and media stations for children and adults, as well as an audio guide featuring stories from the former prison. The exhibition and its offerings provide different ways to explore the museum’s topics.
Guided city tours and cultural discoveries
Luckau offers a variety of guided city tours throughout the year. They range from tours following in Napoleon’s footsteps and nighttime tours of historic Luckau to tours exploring the history of churches, monasteries and prisons against the backdrop of the Reformation. If you are interested in a particular topic, check dates and availability locally.
Visitors are drawn to St. Nikolai Hall Church by the sounds of its richly decorated Donator organ. The cultural game “Luckau – A delight to conquer” offers an intriguing way to explore the city’s history: on a discovery tour, you explore the city by solving puzzles. Check local availability in advance. The themed gardens on Schlossberg also invite you to take leisurely walks. Luckau therefore offers both a walk along the city wall and other ways to enjoy culture and outdoor activities.
