Bestensee can be explored through its waters, paths and local culture. Swimming spots at Großer Tonteich and Todnitzsee sit alongside a 16.6-kilometre loop around two lakes; the LAUSL Park and the fieldstone church add natural and local history. When planning, it is worth tailoring your stay to whether you prefer to prioritise swimming, the lakeside loop or individual local sights.

Swimming spots at Tonteich and Todnitzsee

At Großer Tonteich, also known as Körbiskruger Tonsee, there is a sandy beach, a sunbathing lawn and a naturist beach. The natural swimming area at Todnitzsee also has a large sunbathing lawn and a wide beach. The swimming spots differ in their beach features: Tonteich has a naturist beach, while Todnitzsee is described as having a wide beach and an explicitly large sunbathing lawn. Both locations have a sunbathing lawn. Check conditions before visiting, as facilities may change.

Lake scenery and circular trail

Pätzer Vordersee covers about 1.7 km². Bestensee and the village of Pätz lie on its shores; to the south, the lake is connected to Pätzer Hintersee, and to the north, to Todnitzsee. These water connections provide a clear sense of direction within the lake landscape: Vordersee lies between two bodies of water connected in opposite directions.

The circular trail around Pätzer Vordersee and Pätzer Hintersee is 16.6 kilometres long and starts and ends at Bestensee station. In the area around the destination, the route passes through forests and meadows; in Liepegrund, it continues through the landscape of Heideseen Nature Park. Its length makes the loop a planning consideration in its own right. A regional rail connection (RE) is listed at Bestensee station for travelling to and from the circular trail. Check the timetable for your travel dates before setting out.

Natural spots and local discoveries

LAUSL Park in Bestensee features an exhibition of old agricultural equipment, a playground beneath apple trees, a barefoot path and a nature trail. Its information boards, nesting aids and nature quizzes give the trail a different focus from the exhibition: here, the emphasis is on nature, while the exhibition focuses on traditional agriculture. These features offer several distinct ways to enjoy the park, without all sharing the same focus.

The station and Mühlen-Weinberg Bestensee are just a few minutes’ walk from LAUSL Park. Wood carvings by a chainsaw artist can also be seen in the Generationenwald and on the adjacent vineyard. These artworks add another local point of interest to the nature and park themes.

Fieldstone church and village history

The fieldstone church in Bestensee is an example of a medieval village church and was probably built towards the end of the 14th century. Murals on its south wall are thought to date from the early 15th century. The church’s construction and its murals therefore point to two different historical periods. For those interested in cultural history, the church offers a distinct connection to the town, alongside its lakes and natural sites.

When choosing your stay in Bestensee, you can set your priorities accordingly: swimming spots, the lakeside loop, or local natural and cultural sites. If the circular trail is part of your plans, take its length into account and check the rail connection in advance.
