Explore Bersteland through its landscapes and village history. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the different village settings in mind: Freiwalde combines a riverside landscape with historic buildings and traces of settlement; in Reichwalde, walks and trails take centre stage. This lets you decide whether to focus on village scenery or outdoor activities.

Landscapes and trails

Freiwalde, a district of Bersteland, lies in the Baruth glacial valley between the Kabel and the Kaulschen Graben. The Berste flows through Freiwalde and past Reichwalde on its way towards Lübben and the Spree. The river provides a clear reference point in the landscape, while the village settings differ along the route described.

In Niewitz, the pine forest is 500 to 1,000 metres from the village. Fields and meadows lie between the settlement and the forest; the Berste runs along the northern edge of the village. Forest, open land and water thus form a clearly defined contrast. The Spreewaldhof Niewitz is associated with cucumber production and strawberry harvesting, which shape the landscape around the village.

In Reichwalde, you can hike, cycle and enjoy nature along the Mühlgraben and the Berste. A walk through the village can take in four half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, a former inn and well-kept front gardens. Reichwalde is about three kilometres from the Gurkenradweg, which can be reached via the district road. As signposting and road conditions can affect the route, check the current directions before setting off.

Village history and buildings

In Freiwalde, the topics range from settlement history to different types of buildings. Archaeological investigations link the history of settlement to the Bronze Age. An archaeological monument has been designated across 20 hectares of the former industrial area. The designation refers to a larger area.

At Hauptstraße 13, you can see a half-timbered house with Wendish influences and an external gallery. Freiwalde Church offers a different architectural feature: it is a small, rectangular neo-Gothic brick church, consecrated in 1871. Arrangements for visiting the church may vary; check opening hours in advance.

The Freiwalde Bauerstube at Am Sandberg 37 is also part of the village’s historic character. At around 500 years old, it is regarded as the oldest house in the village in its original form. Taken together, these points of interest are clearly distinct: one is a house described as particularly old, another is a half-timbered building with an external gallery, and another is a neo-Gothic church. These features can be read as part of the history of architecture without grouping them into a single period.

Traditions and regional context

Fastnacht and Zampern are celebrated as local traditions in Niewitz. They include a costumed procession through the village, during which money, bacon and eggs are collected. If you want to plan your trip around these customs, check the dates and participation requirements in good time: dates and opportunities to take part may vary. Regional products of the Spreewald include Spreewald gherkins, horseradish, cold-pressed linseed oil and Hefeplinsen; individual producers and availability may change.

In the wider destination of Dahme-Spreewald, the Dahme Lake District and the Spreewald together make up part of the travel region in the district of Dahme-Spreewald. The region encompasses natural, historical and cultural attractions. More than 1,000 kilometres of well-developed, fully signposted cycle paths connect landscapes and destinations in the Spreewald and the Dahme Lake District; check trail conditions before setting off. Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park is also located in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree and includes more than 100 lakes. These wider landscapes complement the village settings without replacing them.
