Literary stations, a cycling route by the Cascade Weir and a rest area on the Dahme offer different reasons to stay in Märkisch-Buchholz. The Fühmann Trail brings a cultural theme to the town; the Dahme Cycle Route leads there, while the Children’s Forest offers a break for play and exercise. For waterway hikers, the seasonal bivouac site is intended as a rest area. Depending on your interests, culture, cycling, or a break in the forest and by the water can take centre stage.

A trail dedicated to Franz Fühmann

The Fühmann Trail runs through Märkisch-Buchholz via 14 QR-code stations and is 2.2 kilometres long. The QR codes provide access to short texts and activities. The trail was created in 2022 to mark Franz Fühmann’s 100th birthday. From 1959 until his death in 1984, Fühmann lived alternately in Berlin and Märkisch-Buchholz. The trail thus makes a direct connection to the years Fühmann spent in both places.

Literature in the former school building

The Franz Fühmann Literature and Meeting Centre is housed in the former primary school building in Märkisch-Buchholz. It features a permanent exhibition about the writer’s life and work. The trail and centre offer different formats: short texts and activities at QR-code stations, and a permanent exhibition. Check current visitor arrangements before your visit.

The Cascade Weir and cycling route

The Märkisch-Buchholz Cascade Weir is listed as a place of interest on the Lesefährte Waldweisen. The Dahme Cycle Route leads to Märkisch-Buchholz; in the town centre, it passes the Cascade Weir on the Dahme flood relief canal. The weir overcomes a difference in elevation of 6 metres. This makes it possible to locate the cycling route by reference to a specific structure in the town. Check current route conditions before setting off.

A break in the forest or by the water

The Children’s Forest in Märkisch-Buchholz has a forest playground and is a good place for a break to play and exercise. Check local facilities and access before travelling there. The bivouac site is right by the Dahme and is intended as a rest area for waterway hikers. Its operating season is listed as May to the end of September; confirm that it is currently open before making plans. The two places to take a break therefore have clearly different purposes: the Children’s Forest is for play and exercise, while the bivouac site is for a rest by the water during a waterway trip.

Dahme-Spreewald in the wider region

In the wider travel destination of Dahme-Spreewald, the Dahme Lake District and the Spreewald together form part of the holiday region in the district of Dahme-Spreewald. More than 1,000 kilometres of well-developed, fully signposted cycle routes connect landscapes and places to visit in the Spreewald and the Dahme Lake District. Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park lies in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree and includes more than 100 lakes.

The region’s cultural attractions are also spread across different locations. The Schlepzig Farmers’ Museum is housed in a completely preserved complex of farm buildings dating from 1818. Its faithfully furnished farmhouse depicts small-scale farming life. In Mittenwalde, the Salzmarkt 5 Museum tells the town’s more than 700-year history in a restored half-timbered house. The Funkerberg Museum in Königs Wusterhausen is located at the authentic site of Germany’s first radio broadcast: a Christmas concert was broadcast there on 22 December 1920.
