Niederlehme can be explored through three distinct themes: the circular trail in the Niederlehmer Luch, the 1902 water tower and the church’s furnishings. Nature, the townscape and sacred art sit side by side; the hike provides the clearest framework for spending several hours in the area.

Hiking and the Townscape in Niederlehme

The circular route through the Niederlehmer Luch is 9 kilometres long and takes about two to three hours. It is marked and includes a nature trail around a pond. Information boards, benches and a small sandy beach are also part of the route. The approximate time estimate helps with day planning and leaves room for flexibility rather than prescribing a minute-by-minute schedule. Alongside the route’s length, the nature trail gives it its own thematic focus.

The water tower, built in 1902, is Niederlehme’s landmark and clearly visible beside the A10. As a striking structure, it provides a different focal point from the hiking route and is part of the townscape. Visitors interested in a place’s history and character will find a tangible local connection here, without needing to plan an additional excursion.

The church interior also offers details of its own: the pulpit is made of sandstone blocks, and there is also a large crucifix and two tall candlesticks. The Dinse organ is considered a notable musical feature. Together, the materials, furnishings and organ provide an ecclesiastical focus alongside the hike and the water tower.

Culture and Nature in Königs Wusterhausen

The wider destination of Königs Wusterhausen offers further historical themes. Königs Wusterhausen Palace served as the seat of government for Frederick William I and was the meeting place of the legendary Tobacco Cabinet. The Dahmeland Museum presents a permanent exhibition on the history of the Dahmeland and the town of Königs Wusterhausen, complemented by changing special exhibitions. In Königs Wusterhausen, three museums are within walking distance of the railway station. They tell the town’s history from different perspectives.

The Tiergarten is another option for nature and hiking in Königs Wusterhausen. Today, it is a diverse mixed deciduous forest and nature reserve; it was established in 1725 as a game park for the Soldier King. The Tiergarten circular trail is 7.5 kilometres long and can begin and end either at Königs Wusterhausen railway station or at the hiking car parks by the Tiergarten. In terms of distance alone, it is shorter than the 9-kilometre loop in the Niederlehmer Luch.

The themes along the Tiergarten trail are also distinct: ten wooden sculptures bring aspects of local history to life. At the orchard, the route includes the stone circle “The Twelve Wise Ones”, with a barefoot path, a balancing beam and a rest area. It also passes quiet stretches of the banks of the Staabe and Krimnicksee. Husareneck and Spukbrücke are also sights along the circular trail.

For this hike, Königs Wusterhausen railway station can serve as the starting or ending point. It is served by regional trains on the RE and RB lines, as well as by the S-Bahn. If you are planning the route from the station, check the timetables for your travel dates; alternatively, the route description lists hiking car parks by the Tiergarten as starting and ending points.

Water activities are also part of the wider destination of Königs Wusterhausen: in the central town and almost all districts, the lake landscape offers outdoor swimming pools, bathing spots, boathouses, moorings and fishing spots. Possible activities include paddling, rowing, sailing, water skiing and pedal boating. This offers a different thematic choice from the two hiking routes, without attributing the water-based activities to Niederlehme.
