A bathing beach and two named hiking trails offer concrete local points of reference when planning a trip to Schwerin.

Explore Schwerin on foot and at the bathing beach

The Schwerin Hiking Trail is 12 km long. This specific distance gives you a guide when planning a hike. There is also the Schwerin Circular Hiking Trail, another named circular route. The two names refer to different hiking options: the length of one is specified, while the other’s name highlights that it is a circular trail.

The bathing beach also offers its own focus for a stay in Schwerin. This means that, when planning locally, the beach and hiking represent different interests. You can decide which one you would like to focus on without treating the two hiking trails as the same.

In the wider Dahme-Spreewald destination

The Dahme Lake District and the Spreewald are both part of the travel region in the district of Dahme-Spreewald. This wider destination brings together scenic, historical and cultural attractions. The following nature and culture themes give an impression of the region’s diversity.

Nature and outdoor activities

In the district of Dahme-Spreewald, more than 1,000 km of well-maintained and fully signposted cycling paths connect landscapes and excursion destinations in the Spreewald and the Dahme Lake District. Cycling is therefore a distinct part of planning a trip to the region. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The “Dahme-Heideseen” Nature Park is located in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree and includes more than 100 lakes. The “Buchenhain” nature trail offers another way to take in the surroundings: it leads to a 7 m-high observation tower with views of the surrounding area. Here, the trail and viewpoint come together as a specific destination for an outing in nature.

In Schlepzig, the harbor is the starting point for punt or paddle-boat trips along a 3 km circular route through the Spreewald village. Services may vary by season; check in advance which trips are available. This makes it easy to include this water-based activity in your plans.

Museums, local history and architecture

The Schlepzig Farm Museum is housed in a fully preserved ensemble of farm buildings dating from 1818. Its faithfully furnished farmhouse depicts small-scale farming life. Together, the buildings and furnishings offer two insights: into traditional farm architecture and into the everyday life shown in the exhibition.

The Funkerberg Museum is located at the authentic site of Germany’s first radio broadcast. It was transmitted from Königs Wusterhausen on December 22, 1920, as a Christmas concert. Technology is also part of the visit: at regular demonstrations, visitors can see a 1,000-horsepower Deutz diesel engine in action. As demonstration times may change, check them before your visit.

In Mittenwalde, the Salzmarkt 5 Museum tells the town’s more than 700-year history in a restored half-timbered house. Guided tours take visitors through the historic farming town; the sights mentioned include St. Maurice’s Church and the local history museum. Advance registration and a minimum group size are required for the tours.

The tower of St. Maurice’s Church has viewing platforms at a height of around 50 m. The climb involves about 200 steps; access conditions may change. If you would like to plan a visit for the views, check current access arrangements beforehand. Another historic stop is the fieldstone church in Bestensee, an example of a medieval village church that probably dates from the late 14th century.

Königs Wusterhausen Palace also offers a glimpse into history: it can only be visited on a guided tour. Visitors learn about the life and royal living quarters of Frederick William I, as well as his era. As tour times may change, it is advisable to check the current schedule in advance.
