A church tower visible from far away and an organ regarded as the only surviving instrument of its type anywhere in the world give Eichwalde a cultural and historical distinction. There are also exhibitions, concerts and readings at the Old Fire Station, as well as the natural swimming area on Lake Zeuthen, with its grassy and sandy sunbathing lawn.
Church and Parabrahm Organ
Eichwalde Protestant Church was built in 1908 in the neo-Gothic style, based on plans by Carl Zaar and Rudolf Vahl. Its façade features red Märkisch brick, pointed-arch windows and light-colored plaster. The tower is considered the highest point in town, is visible from far away and defines Eichwalde’s silhouette.
The interior has three aisles, meaning it is divided into three sections, and features arcades and galleries. The Parabrahm organ is also part of the church. It was restored in 2002, can be heard by visitors at concerts and is considered the only surviving organ of its type anywhere in the world. If you would like to attend a concert, check the dates before your trip.
Culture and Routes
Since opening in October 1996, the Old Fire Station in Eichwalde has developed into a cultural meeting place. It hosts exhibitions, concerts and readings. This means that, alongside church architecture and organ music, other cultural events are also in the spotlight. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the dates in advance.
The Eichwalde–Zeuthen tour starts at Eichwalde station and initially follows August-Bebel-Allee, passing the church. It is not an official hiking trail; there are no waymarks along the route to help you find your way. After crossing the railway barrier, continue for about 100 metres to Hirtenfließ. Eichwalde also has a direct S-Bahn connection towards Berlin and Königs Wusterhausen. If you are considering the town as a travel destination, you can take this connection into account alongside its local cultural and natural attractions.
At Lake Zeuthen and During the Season
The Eichwalde natural swimming area on Lake Zeuthen has a spacious grassy and sandy sunbathing lawn for relaxing. Nearby, the Kleine Umfahrt Zeuthen around the Rauchfangswerder peninsula lists swimming, sailing, rowing and fishing on the lakes as possible activities.
From March to November, Mario, Eichwalde’s ice cream maker, offers a variety of ice cream creations daily. These include rice pudding ice cream, as well as cucumber and rose ice cream. As the offering is seasonal, check opening hours and availability before your trip.
