Esslingen district is one of the ten districts in the Swabian Alb Geopark. Fossils and Roman History
The Hauff Prehistoric Museum is located in the heart of the Holzmaden fossil site and displays fossils from the Posidonia Shale. With around 1,000 square metres of exhibition space, it is one of Germany’s largest privately owned natural history museums. Here, both the fossils and the scale of the exhibition take centre stage.
In Köngen, the Roman Park consists of a museum building and an open-air site; it is located on the site of the former Roman fort of Grinario. The Romans built the fort between 90 and 95 AD and abandoned it in 155. Afterwards, villagers used the site, among other things, to build a Roman bath. This creates a clear contrast when choosing a focus: Holzmaden is known for fossils, while Köngen is about the fort and its later use. The format also differs: in Holzmaden, the museum takes centre stage; in Köngen, the Roman Park includes both a museum building and an open-air site.
Natural and Cultural Landscapes in Beuren
The Beuren Open-Air Museum features a themed trail with 18 stations about natural and cultural landscapes, orchard varieties and cultivated plants. The Beuren Soil Trail offers a different focus. Guided tours are held there regularly, and group tours can be arranged individually. The two trails therefore differ both in their themes and in how they present them.
Landscape Areas and Cycling
Six distinct landscape areas characterise Esslingen district: Schurwald, Schönbuch, Fildern, the Neckar Valley, the Alb foothills and the Albtrauf escarpment. The district’s orchard landscape includes 1.5 million fruit trees that shape the scenery. This is the district-wide perspective; by contrast, the themed trail in Beuren offers a local way to explore the natural and cultural landscape and also focuses on individual orchard varieties and cultivated plants.
Since 2020, cyclists have had around 1,200 kilometres of district cycling routes at their disposal. Consistent bicycle route signage is in place throughout the district. Cycling is therefore a distinct focus alongside the museum and landscape themes.
Compare Seasonal Conditions
Two other activities have different conditions that can affect when you visit: the soil profile pits on the Beuren Soil Trail are accessible from April to October; when there is sufficient snow, the district offers three cross-country ski trails. Access to the profile pits has a specified seasonal window, while cross-country skiing depends on snow conditions. If either activity is a factor in your stay, check that the relevant conditions match your travel dates.
