In the heart of Großbettlingen stands St. Andrew’s Church, surrounded by the old cemetery. The village library adds a half-timbered atmosphere, while green spaces and opportunities for walks and hikes round out the picture. Visitors planning a stay can choose from different focuses: local history, culture and outdoor activities each offer something distinct.

Church history and half-timbered architecture

A wooden village church already stood on the site of today’s St. Andrew’s Church in the 8th century; the stone village church was built there in 1497. The change from wood to stone makes the long history of the village tangible at the church’s present location.

The Großbettlingen village library offers a different architectural perspective. It is housed in a converted old Neoclassical farmhouse, whose cosy half-timbered interiors give the rooms their character. Around 5,000 items are available to borrow. The rooms also host cosy evenings featuring music, author readings, cabaret, comedy and exhibitions. Reading and cultural events are two sides of the same place. If you are planning to attend a particular evening, check the date in advance, as the programme may change.

Green spaces and summer refreshment

Forum Grün combines lovely views with a peaceful atmosphere in a central spot in the community. The area was created by transforming the Old Churchyard and the Old Cemetery and was officially opened in June 2016. Its views and tranquillity give the space a different focus from the historic building of St. Andrew’s Church.

The playground at the Forum in Großbettlingen is surrounded by greenery and offers space to play, explore and relax. Benches and shaded areas make it a pleasant place for the whole family to spend time. Its facilities also make it appealing to families looking for play opportunities and somewhere to relax.

Since 2017, the Forum of Generations has been a lively meeting place for people of all ages.

The water-treading basin is located by the pumping station in the Stetten area. It was built in early 2013. Following extensive optimisation work in 2015, it offers a welcome refreshment in the summer months for young and old alike, and is very popular.

Walks, landscapes and markets

Großbettlingen is a starting point for lovely hikes and walks. Geigersbühl is the highest point in the community; in Eduard Mörike’s novel “Maler Nolten,” the view towards the Swabian Alb escarpment is described vividly from there. This gives the landscape a literary connection as well as offering opportunities for outdoor activity.

The markets in Großbettlingen offer fresh regional produce and lovingly made handicrafts. They add a look at local products and craftsmanship to the cultural and landscape highlights. If you are planning a visit to a market, check the dates in advance.
