A medieval monastery courtyard, a nature trail and a Stadtbahn connection to Stuttgart give visitors different ways to explore Nellingen. This district of Ostfildern combines distinctive architectural history with paths through fields and meadows. You can easily match whichever of these aspects you want to focus on with your accommodation and daily plans.

Monastery Courtyard and Village Centre

The medieval village centre lies around the Monastery Courtyard and Riegelstraße in the southern part of Nellingen. Several buildings with different historical dates stand within the walled courtyard: the oldest beams in the provost’s building date back to 1498, the Old Vicarage was built in 1565, and today’s town hall in 1599. Together, the buildings give a concrete impression of how much historic fabric has been preserved here.

The centrepiece of the Monastery Courtyard was a late Romanesque church built around 1220; its tower still stands today. Another landmark in the town’s history is the provost’s residence, built around 1250. It was established on the site of a former castle and served as the northernmost outpost of a monastery, administering its property and income. The church and the provost’s residence thus offer different historical perspectives on Nellingen: one defines the Monastery Courtyard, while the other points to the outpost’s administrative role.

The An der Halle cultural centre also tells a story of changing use: it is housed in a former tram depot. Today, it accommodates the municipal adult education centre and music school. Those interested in architectural history can therefore look beyond the older buildings to an example of a former depot taking on a cultural role.

Stadtbahn, Swimming and Cycling

From its terminus in Nellingen, Stadtbahn lines U7 and U8 reach Stuttgart Central Station in approximately 30 minutes. This approximate journey time provides a useful planning guide for a stay that also includes Stuttgart. Since journey times and service patterns can change, it is worth checking the current timetable before travelling.

Nellingen indoor swimming pool has set swimming times. These include a children’s swimming session on Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m. If you want to plan around this time, check the opening hours before your visit. For a different kind of activity, the Filder Cycling Tour is a circular route through Ostfildern via Ruit, Kemnat, Scharnhausen and Nellingen. It offers a way to explore the various places mentioned by bike; this description does not assume a specific starting point or time budget.

Fields, Meadows and Nature Trail

The full circular route of the orchard and nature trail reaches the outskirts of Nellingen. There, the path follows the Katzenbach through fields and meadows. Information boards explain different nut trees, making the plants along the way a focus of the walk. This gives the circular route a different emphasis from the historic village centre: here, the landscape and the information about the trees take centre stage.

Above Wörnizhäuser Mill, the orchard and nature trail runs gently downhill alongside the Körsch. Small information boards explain woody plants with wild fruits. The nature trail thus presents different topics side by side: various nut trees by the Katzenbach, and woody plants with wild fruits by the Körsch. When choosing accommodation in Nellingen, you can make these nature themes a focus in their own right alongside the Monastery Courtyard and Stadtbahn, without tying them to a fixed daily itinerary.

Ostfildern as a Wider Setting

Beyond Nellingen, Ostfildern offers other cultural and landscape attractions. Since 1976, the Ostfildern Municipal Gallery has presented five to six changing exhibitions of contemporary art each year. The Bürgergärten Scharnhauser Park also feature the Geotreppe, a rock collection that brings the history of the Earth within reach. The Bürgergärten were created after local residents took the initiative to continue caring for parts of the Landesgartenschau’s Traumfelder from 2002. Also in Scharnhauser Park is the 1.4-kilometre-long Landschaftstreppe, a green park of meadow fields with views of the Swabian Alb. These attractions are part of Ostfildern and complement the picture of Nellingen rather than describing its village centre or nature trail.
