A cherry mother garden that serves as a source of scions, and a marble mill where you can examine stones under a microscope, give Neidlingen a distinctive character. There is also a view over the Neidlingen Valley, reachable on foot in about 30 minutes from the parking lot at Untere Wendung. For planning your stay, the town brings together horticultural themes, insights into traditional crafts and a landscape perspective.

Cherry Mother Garden: Varieties and Microclimate

The Neidlingen Horticultural Association (Obst- und Gartenbauverein Neidlingen e.V.) has been caring for and developing the cherry mother garden in Neidlingen for many years. The garden serves as a source of scions and provides insights as new varieties are trialled with soil and microclimate in mind. Anyone interested in the connection between cultural landscapes and horticultural practice will find two concrete perspectives here: the association’s long-standing work and the conditions under which new varieties are trialled. The cherry mother garden is therefore not just about its upkeep, but also its role in variety development.

Marble Mill: Stones, Craftsmanship and Marbles

The Neidlingen marble mill was restored at the Seebach in January 2005. Visitors can discover the colours and fine structures of the stones with a microscope and watch the marble maker at work. Balls and marbles can be purchased on site at the marble mill; check current availability before setting out. The activities offer different points of focus: the microscope draws attention to the properties of the stones, while watching the marble maker puts the work at the mill centre stage. The marble mill thus offers both a closer look at stones and an insight into the craft.

The Lindach and Views over the Neidlingen Valley

The Lindach rises at an elevation of 620 metres in the Pfanne, at the southern end of the Neidlingen valley area. After a few dozen metres, it formed the once impressive, though not very water-rich, Neidlingen Waterfall. Views over the Neidlingen Valley are another point of interest in the landscape: it is about a 30-minute walk from the parking lot at Untere Wendung. The walking time is approximate, and trail conditions may vary. Allow some extra time rather than treating the estimate as an exact arrival time.

Esslingen as the Wider Travel Destination

Within the wider travel destination of Esslingen, Esslingen district is one of the ten districts in the Swabian Alb UNESCO Global Geopark. Six landscape areas shape the district: Schurwald, Schönbuch, Fildern, the Neckar Valley, the Alb Foothills and the Alb Escarpment. The landscape is also shaped by its traditional orchard meadows, which are home to 1.5 million fruit trees. These regional connections provide a broader perspective alongside the specific discoveries in Neidlingen.

There are other distinct places to explore the district’s cultural and natural heritage. The Urwelt-Museum Hauff in Holzmaden displays fossils from the Posidonia Shale and is located in the heart of the Holzmaden fossil site. With around 1,000 m² of exhibition space, it is one of Germany’s largest private natural history museums. The Köngen Roman Park consists of a museum building and an open-air site. At the Beuren Open-Air Museum, a themed trail with 18 stations explores topics related to the natural and cultural landscape, including traditional orchard varieties and cultivated plants. The profile pits on the Beuren Soil Trail are accessible from April to October; guided tours are offered regularly. In the wider travel destination of Esslingen, local themes of horticulture, craftsmanship and landscape sit alongside a range of cultural and nature attractions.
