A stay in Bissingen an der Teck can begin with a wide range of interests: in Ochsenwang, memories of Mörike meet architectural history; at Bissinger Lake, swimming takes centre stage; and the annual Hülenhock offers a special event to plan a trip around. You can first decide whether culture, lakeside recreation or a festival will be the main reason for your visit.

Ochsenwang: Mörike and local history

The small church in Ochsenwang was built in 1706 with substantial involvement from numerous members of the local community. Opposite the church is Eduard Mörike’s former official residence, now a memorial site. The exhibition features literary and official documents from his time in Ochsenwang. A visit to the Mörike House must be arranged in advance; make an appointment before your trip.

The Mörike House is on Literary Cycle Route No. 9. In Ochsenwang, the Mörike Museum reopened on 9 April 2022 after its permanent exhibition had been redesigned over several years. If you are planning a museum visit, check the latest visitor information.

Bissinger Lake and summer volleyball

Bissinger Lake is used for swimming. There is a beach volleyball court with a sand playing area right beside the lake, and it is especially popular in summer. Swimming and volleyball are therefore both options to focus on; the seasonal reference applies to the court.

The Hülenhock as a reason to visit

The Hülenhock takes place annually in Ochsenwang and is popular with people of all ages. Unlike a stay focused on Mörike or swimming, a trip here is timed around the event date.

Esslingen as the regional setting

The wider Esslingen travel region offers a broader view of the district. Six landscape areas define Esslingen district: the Schurwald, the Schönbuch, the Filder plain, the Neckar Valley, the foothills of the Swabian Jura and the Alb escarpment. Its orchard landscape includes 1.5 million fruit trees and shapes the scenery. On the northern edge of the Swabian Jura, the district is home to the 110-hectare Randecker Maar nature reserve, established to preserve a unique geological natural feature.

Since 2020, cyclists in Esslingen district have had around 1,200 kilometres of district cycle routes at their disposal; continuous cycle-route signage is in place throughout the district. The Urwelt Museum Hauff in Holzmaden offers a different thematic focus: it displays fossils from the Posidonia Shale and is located in the heart of the Holzmaden fossil site. The museum has around 1,000 m² of exhibition space and is one of Germany’s largest private natural history museums. The Köngen Roman Park consists of a museum building and an open-air site. This means that natural history in Holzmaden and the museum and open-air attractions in Köngen offer distinct areas of interest.
