The Schäferhauser See recreational area is a popular destination for walkers, joggers, cyclists, families and anyone seeking relaxation. Wendlingen am Neckar also offers a forest discovery trail, historic routes, churches and a town museum. This gives you a way to choose what to see based on your interests in nature and culture.

Outdoors: lake, forest and trails

Since June 2024, there has been a forest discovery trail in the „Waldäcker“ area. It starts at the Lehmgrüble car park and winds through the forest for about 2,700 metres, with various stations along the way. Its starting point, stations and approximate length give you specific details to consider when including this trail in your travel plans.

The Wendlingen am Neckar landscape conservation area extends almost all the way around the town. Its characteristic traditional orchards provide habitats for many plants and animals. Another notable landscape feature is HĂĽttensee: its water surface covers 2.5 hectares; it lies beside the Neckar and not far from the mouth of the Lauter.

The routes also have different geographical contexts. Three historic circular trails pass through Wendlingen am Neckar. Two sections of the Way of St. James run through the hamlet of Bodelshofen. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route crosses the municipal area of Wendlingen. This gives you three distinct points of reference for planning: circular trails through the town, sections of the Way of St. James in the hamlet, and a cycling route within the municipal area.

Town history, churches and museum

The Wendlingen am Neckar Town Museum displays archaeological finds and explanations of various eras, from the Stone Age through the Bronze and Iron Ages to the Romans and Alemanni. An audiovisual presentation with a touchscreen provides information about archaeological sites and finds. The museum is specifically geared towards families; children in particular can explore independently.

The Eusebius Church is a Late Gothic building dating from the 15th century. Its features include a predella painting on wood and a life-size Gothic tomb. The Gothic St. James’s Church is in the hamlet of Bodelshofen, with 15th-century frescoes and three church windows by Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen. The two churches offer different historical details: the predella painting and tomb in one, and the frescoes and three windows designed by von Stockhausen in the other.

The gallery’s history is also tied to a specific building. In 1979, the town of Wendlingen am Neckar acquired the residential villa at Weberstraße 2 and converted it into a gallery by 1982. This is a distinct chapter in local architectural history, alongside the churches with their medieval character.

Festivals and historic walks

Since 1952, the Egerländer have held their annual Vinzenzifest in Wendlingen am Neckar in summer. The festival is therefore a recurring seasonal event; check the specific dates before your trip. In 2023, the citizens’ association and town administration also revived the programme of historic town walks. If you would like to plan one of these walks, check in advance whether a date is available.

When looking for a hotel in Wendlingen am Neckar, you can use the purpose of your stay as a starting point: a visit around the summer Vinzenzifest can be planned around the festival dates, while other local attractions may take priority on a culture- or nature-focused trip.
