Esslingen am Neckar combines a distinctive historic townscape with vineyards, museums and activities on the water. More than 200 half-timbered houses shape the Old Town; Esslingen Castle has been the city’s most prominent landmark for almost 700 years. There is also a wine discovery trail with 26 stations, canoe trips on the canals and an S-Bahn connection to Stuttgart. During your stay, you can choose between local history, countryside and seasonal highlights.
Half-Timbered Houses and City History
The Old Town is home to more than 200 half-timbered houses. The house at Heugasse 3 was built in 1261 and is considered Germany’s oldest half-timbered house. Nine former estate courtyards are also still part of the cityscape. Together, these buildings give Esslingen’s history a visible place in the city today.
The City Museum in the Yellow House at Hafenmarkt 7 presents Esslingen’s history in its permanent exhibition, from the city’s first mention in 777 through to the 20th century. Beneath St. Dionys Church, the Archaeological Museum showcases the church’s predecessor buildings and the beginnings of the city’s history from the 8th century. Those interested in cultural history can explore these two distinct subjects.
The J. F. Schreiber Museum in the Salemer estate courtyard at Untere Beutau 8–10 tells the story of Schreiber Verlag and its products. These include cardboard models, classroom wall charts, paper theatres, and nature and children’s books. New models are continually made at a large craft table. Contemporary and international art takes centre stage at the Galerie der Stadt Esslingen in Villa Merkel, where exhibitions change regularly.
Vineyards, Castle and Cycling
Esslingen’s steep vineyards, with their old dry-stone walls, are characteristic of the city. Maintaining them remains a particular challenge. The Esslingen wine discovery trail passes through this cultural landscape and offers insights at 26 stations into the history of wine, its cultivation, the work of winegrowers on the steep slopes, and nature and geology. It brings together the subject of viticulture with themes from the landscape and the city’s history.
The Neckar Valley Cycle Route also passes through steep vineyards in Esslingen. Its fifth stage runs from Esslingen am Neckar to Besigheim and is 59.52 kilometres long. In Esslingen, the route passes a castle that forms part of the remaining city wall. For a different view over the city, climb up to Esslingen Castle: the ascent involves more than 300 steps and rewards you with a view across the city.
