Beuren can be explored through three distinct themes: its protected historic center, marked hiking trails, and local specialties. When planning your visit, you can focus on local history and the wine press, a hike, or the soil trail. The local hiking network covers more than 55 kilometers; some routes are flat, while others climb uphill.

Historic Center and Beuren Wine Press

Beuren’s historic center is protected as a heritage site under Section 19 of the Monument Protection Act. This includes the historic layout, streets and squares, green spaces and open areas, as well as historic buildings. Old half-timbered houses shape the town center. The protection therefore applies to the historic fabric of buildings and open spaces, not just to individual buildings.

One notable building is the Beuren wine press. Dendrochronological analysis dates its construction to 1531/32; it is one of 16 surviving wine-press buildings in the Esslingen district. The wine press is also a venue for musical events, dancing, and wine festivals. If you are planning to attend a specific event, check the latest dates in advance.

Hiking Trails and Soil Trail

The more than 55 kilometers of signposted hiking trails offer a choice of flatter and uphill sections. If you prefer a route with a clearly specified distance and individual stops, the Beuren soil trail offers these details: it is four kilometers long and has ten stations. Its soil pits are accessible from April to October and closed from November to March. Guided tours are offered regularly; if you are planning to join one, it is a good idea to check the specific dates.

Another landscape highlight is the “hochgehfestigt” premium hiking trail. It passes through vineyards and natural flower meadows. At the Hohbölle volcanic remnant, a circular route offers a 360-degree panorama. The hiking options described can therefore be distinguished by their specific features: the soil trail’s length and stations, the varied terrain of the hiking network, and the vineyards, flower meadows, and panorama at Hohbölle along the premium trail.

Natural Monument and Local Specialties

Tobelweiher is a natural monument known to locals as the “lake.” Culinary terms are also part of Beuren’s local character: typical specialties include cherry brandy, cider, “Gsälz”—Swabian jam—and Täleswein.

In the wider Esslingen destination

The wider Esslingen destination offers a broader view of the district. Esslingen district is one of the ten districts in the Swabian Alb Geopark. Six landscapes define it: Schurwald, Schönbuch, Fildern, the Neckar Valley, the Alb foothills, and the Alb escarpment. The region’s orchards are another prominent feature; they comprise 1.5 million fruit trees and shape the landscape.

The district also offers places to explore other cultural and natural attractions. The Urwelt-Museum Hauff in Holzmaden displays fossils from the Posidonia Shale and is located in the heart of the Holzmaden fossil site. With around 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, it is one of Germany’s largest private natural history museums. Römerpark Köngen comprises a museum building and an open-air site. Cycling is another district-wide attraction: since 2020, around 1,200 kilometers of cycling routes have been available across the district, with consistent cycle route signage throughout.
