Fossils from the Lias, a trail through the landscape and historic buildings reveal different sides of Ohmden. The town also has a local pastry tradition: the Hafenknopf. You can choose a focus for your stay: geological history and fossil hunting, time outdoors, or the town’s architectural and culinary features.
Fossils and Geological History
Ohmden’s marine shale contains fossils of reptiles, fish and numerous invertebrates. They date from the Lias, around 180 million years ago. These finds make geological history a tangible subject here: a single rock contains the remains of different animal groups from the same geological period.
Visitors can search for fossils at the Kromer shale quarry in Ohmden. Check the conditions with the operator before travelling. Ohmden is also part of the Holzmaden excavation protection area, established in 1979. Collecting fossils in the protected area requires a fee and permits from the State Office for Monument Preservation and the landowners. Check the conditions before searching.
Some of the finest fossils from the Ohmden area are displayed at the Urwelt-Museum Hauff in Holzmaden. In the wider Esslingen travel destination, the museum also exhibits fossils from the Posidonia Shale. Its exhibition area covers around 1,000 square metres; it is one of Germany’s largest private natural history museums. This makes it possible to complement local fossil hunting with a look at the collection and its geological context.
Hiking the Ohmden Circular Trail
The Ohmden Circular Trail is about nine kilometres long. It passes horse paddocks, sheep pastures, orchards, streams and waterways. Open pastures and waterways are therefore as much a part of the route as the orchards. Views include Ohmden, Teck Castle, Breitenstein and Limburg. Three starting points are marked with hiking signs.
The approximate distance provides a clear guide for planning your hike; no walking time or difficulty level is specified. Check current trail conditions before setting out. If you would like to consider other nature trails, hiking paths in the Trinkbachtal offer opportunities to experience the local countryside. The circular trail and the paths in the Trinkbachtal are distinct hiking options.
Building History and a Local Specialty
The church in Ohmden took its present form between 1681 and 1683. Its tower acquired its current external appearance in 1871. Inside are four altarpieces from around 1500, attributed to the Kirchheim painter Thomas Schick. The paintings point to a period earlier than the church’s present architectural form; the tower later acquired another layer of building history.
A former farmhouse with decorative half-timbering dating from 1677 adds to Ohmden’s historic architectural details. A very different local specialty is the Hafenknopf: a salty yeast pastry traditionally baked in a copper mould unique to Ohmden. Together, the church, half-timbering and pastry reveal different facets of the town’s history and local traditions.
