Explore Altbach during your stay through its distinctive local themes: St. Ulrich’s Church and the old town hall are sights, while the orchards offer opportunities for long walks and hikes. There is also an indoor swimming pool as a municipal facility. This brings local history and outdoor activity together with another option in town; if you would like to include the pool, check its current operating status and visitor arrangements in advance. The wider Esslingen travel destination adds further themes at district level.

Sights and walks in Altbach

St. Ulrich’s Church in Altbach is a single-nave church dating from the 15th century, which was renovated in 1851. “Single-nave” describes a church with one nave and offers a brief indication of its architectural form. The two dates mark different points in its architectural history: the period it dates from and its later renovation. The old town hall is another local sight. Altbach thus offers two distinct local landmarks: a church with a historically defined architectural form and a town hall.

The orchards in Altbach offer opportunities for long walks and hikes. The same is true of the nearby Schurwald forest. For planning purposes, their locations are a useful distinction: the orchards are in Altbach, while the Schurwald is in the surrounding area. This lets you distinguish the local orchard landscape from nearby woodland when planning a longer outdoor outing.

Altbach also has an indoor swimming pool. If you would like to include it in your stay, check in advance whether it is currently open and what visitor arrangements apply.

In the wider Esslingen travel destination

Esslingen district is one of ten districts in the Swabian Alb Geopark. Six landscape areas define the district: Schurwald, Schönbuch, Fildern, the Neckar Valley, the Alb foothills and the Albtrauf escarpment. The district’s orchard landscape comprises 1.5 million fruit trees and shapes the scenery. This regional perspective extends beyond Altbach’s orchards, placing them within the district’s diverse landscape.

The Urwelt-Museum Hauff in Holzmaden displays fossils from the Posidonia Shale and is located in the heart of the Holzmaden fossil site. Its exhibition area is around 1,000 square metres; it is one of Germany’s largest privately run natural history museums. Köngen Roman Park consists of a museum building and an open-air site. These two places therefore represent different cultural themes in the wider Esslingen travel destination: fossils in Holzmaden, and the combination of a museum building and an open-air site in Köngen.

The Beuren Open-Air Museum has a themed trail with 18 stops covering natural and cultural landscapes, orchard varieties and cultivated plants. At the Beuren Soil Trail, the soil profile pits are accessible from April to October; guided tours are also offered regularly. Tours for groups can be arranged individually. The themed trail and the soil trail focus on different things: one brings together several topics across 18 stops, while the other adds accessible soil profile pits and guided tours to the visit.

The district is also a planning area in its own right for cyclists: around 1,200 kilometres of district cycling routes have been available since 2020, and continuous cycle route signposting is in place throughout the district. Winter activities are subject to a separate condition: when there is enough snow, three cross-country ski trails are available in the district.

The 6-kilometre Celtic Adventure Trail leads through the late Celtic oppidum of Heidengraben, with a free multimedia app and new information stations along the way. Its length, app and stations combine route and interpretation into a distinctive theme in the wider Esslingen travel destination.
