Oberboihingen can be considered for trip planning through three distinct themes: the historic castle site, a section of the Neckar Valley Cycle Path and the views from the Mörike Observation Tower. This lets you weigh whether local history, cycling or landscapes should be the main focus of your stay. For a trip tied to a specific occasion, the Christmas market on the first weekend of Advent is another option.

Local History and the Advent Season

The Burgstall, Oberboihingen’s oldest castle, stood on Steigstraße on an artificial hill above the outlet of the Talbach stream. Its location is precisely identified: the street, elevated position and stream outlet are all part of the description of this historic site. For travelers interested in local history, the Burgstall is a tangible link to Oberboihingen’s past.

The Oberboihingen Christmas market takes place on the first weekend of Advent and has been a tradition for more than 30 years.

Cycling and Views

Part of the Neckar Valley Cycle Path passes through Oberboihingen. Cyclists can use the town as a reference point when planning to include this route in their trip. Cycling is a different focus from the local history associated with the Burgstall.

From the Mörike Observation Tower near Tachenhäuser Hof, you can see Burg Teck, Hohenneuffen, Achalm and the Swabian Alb, as well as toward Stuttgart and into the Neckar Valley. The view therefore encompasses both named destinations and broader vistas. If you want to include landscapes when choosing a stay, this offers a different focus from the town’s historic sites.

Within the broader Esslingen destination

Six distinct landscape regions shape Esslingen district: the Schurwald, Schönbuch, Filder Plain, Neckar Valley, Alb foothills and Alb escarpment. The district’s landscape also includes orchards, with 1.5 million fruit trees. Esslingen district is also one of the ten districts in the Swabian Alb Geopark. Oberboihingen is the specific town at the center of your trip planning; the six landscape regions and orchards shape Esslingen district.

At the district level, there is also a dedicated scale for cycling route planning: since 2020, around 1,200 kilometers of district cycling routes have been available to cyclists in Esslingen district. The entire district has continuous bicycle route signage. When there is sufficient snow, the district offers three cross-country ski trails. Plan cycling on the district-wide route network; the cross-country ski trails are available only when there is sufficient snow.

The Region’s Cultural and Natural Attractions

The Urwelt-Museum Hauff in Holzmaden displays fossils from the Posidonia Shale and is located in the middle of the Holzmaden fossil site. It has around 1,000 m² of exhibition space and is one of Germany’s largest privately owned natural history museums. The Roman Park in Köngen consists of a museum building and an open-air site. At the Beuren Open-Air Museum, a themed trail with 18 stops explores aspects of the natural and cultural landscape, including orchard varieties and cultivated plants. You can choose between the attractions according to their format: a natural history museum, a museum building with an open-air site, or a themed trail.

Another attraction in the broader Esslingen destination is the 6-kilometer Celtic Experience Trail. A free multimedia app guides visitors along new information stations through the Late Celtic oppidum of Heidengraben.

At the Beuren Soil Trail, the soil profile pits are accessible from April to October and closed from November to March. Guided tours are regularly offered along the trail; group tours can be arranged individually. If you plan to visit this seasonal attraction, take the soil profile pits’ opening period into account. If you are planning regional excursions in addition to visiting Oberboihingen, you can include the Beuren Soil Trail as an attraction in the broader Esslingen destination.
