Leinfelden-Echterdingen is located near Schönbuch Nature Park. The town offers a range of ways to explore when planning a stay: a longer cycling route, circular hiking trails and historic paths, as well as museums and cultural events. This lets you prioritize the landscape, local history and stage performances according to your interests, rather than trying to fit every experience into a single walking tour.
Cycling and hiking routes at different scales
The FilderRadRunde is about 57 kilometers long. It passes through fields, forests, orchards and villages, with views of the Neckar Valley and the Swabian Alb along the way. Its approximate length and changing landscapes provide a practical framework if you would like to include an extended cycling tour in your travel plans.
For hiking, Leinfelden-Echterdingen’s network includes 18 circular trails that start and end at designated hiking parking areas. Six parking areas in the town have information boards showing an overview of the available routes. A shorter option is the historic educational trail through Echterdingen Town Forest: it is about three kilometers long and presents topics in archaeology, geology, and local and forest history on ten boards.
Local history along trails and in museums
The two Historic Trails also have different focuses. The Historic Trail in Echterdingen is a circular route through the town center. It starts at the 16th-century town hall and passes 28 points of interest. The Historic Trail in Leinfelden uses twelve boards to explain the history of the district. If you would rather learn about local history along a circular route than from individual information boards, the trails offer different ways to find your bearings.
Special exhibitions at the Stadtmuseum LE change each year and explore topics in the history of the town and its districts. The museum also hosts talks, discussions, films and festivals; a 30-minute tour covers the history of the districts and the distinctive character of the Filder region. Exhibitions and programs vary. The museum’s aviation history exhibits recall the Zeppelin’s emergency landing in 1908 and offer an impression of today’s airport. Echterdingen is also associated with the subsequent storm-related destruction of Count Zeppelin’s airship LZ 4.
Another local history museum is housed in the Leinfelder Haus, a farmhouse dating from 1570. Its exhibitions include topics such as shoemaking, carpentry and Bosch’s early industrial history. The Stadtmuseum focuses on the history of the town’s districts, while the Leinfelder Haus features selected crafts and industries.
Mills, stage performances and culture
The mill museum at Mäulesmühle documents the milling trade and houses a fully operational milling mechanism dating from 1819. Also at Mäulesmühle, the Kulturscheuer presents comedy, cabaret, live music and performances in Swabian dialect. The program may change, so check current dates before planning to attend an event.
The town’s cultural offering also includes visual arts, music, dance, theater and cabaret. Architectural and artistic landmarks can be seen throughout the town. Those interested in historic mills and regional cuisine will also find points of interest in the Siebenmühlental: the historic mills lie in the Reichenbach Valley, on the southwestern edge of the Filder plateau. Five historic mills are in operation and serve Swabian home-style cooking as well as Greek specialties. Individual businesses and offerings may change.
