Granite landscapes and trails

In the Sidobre, Tarn reveals its granite side: the striking granite plateau has been shaped by erosion, and you’ll encounter its rock formations along the trails. The Sidobre lies at an altitude of approximately 500 to 800 metres. The Maison du Sidobre provides information about how the granite was formed; check visitor information before setting out. A visit to a granite quarry can show you how the stone is extracted and worked. Check access and guided tour arrangements in advance.

Activities in the Sidobre include hiking, fishing and mountain biking. Outdoor conditions vary by season. The Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park has numerous hiking trails and circular routes, four GR long-distance trails and several greenways (Voies vertes). In addition, 28 hiking information sheets combine heritage discoveries with outdoor activities. Tarn Pleine Nature provides route information, tracks and heritage details for outings on foot, horseback, by bicycle or mountain bike. Before your trip, check that route materials are available and consult the latest information in the digital service.

Townscapes and medieval heritage

The episcopal city of Albi forms a complete urban ensemble spanning the Middle Ages to the present day. This invites you to take in the entire urban fabric across several eras, rather than just one historical snapshot. In the medieval centre of Cordes-sur-Ciel, fortified gates, defensive walls and sculpted Gothic façades are part of the townscape. You can reach the upper town on foot via steep, cobbled lanes; take this into account when planning your visit. Visits to artists’ and craftspeople’s workshops are also possible, though availability varies by season.

Other places offer their own historical perspectives: throughout Tarn, you can trace the remains of fortified villages associated with the Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade. The Sorèze Abbey School became a royal military school under Louis XVI. The Dom Robert Museum focuses on colourful works inspired by the nature of the Montagne Noire. Together, these examples show the many ways history and culture can be experienced in Tarn.

Wine and regional cuisine

The Gaillac wine region bears the Vignobles & Découvertes wine tourism label and is considered one of the oldest in France. Participating producers may change. Culinary traditions also offer specific names to discover, including Croquants de Cordes, soupe à l’ail Rose de Lautrec and poumpet. Melsat and bougnettes are known as local specialities. Farms, shops and producers welcome visitors for direct sales; participating outlets and their opening hours may change.

The Mazamet footbridge

The Mazamet footbridge is 140 metres long and hangs 70 metres above the ravine. It connects the heights of Mazamet with the medieval village of Hautpoul. Its dimensions and the connection it provides make it a striking architectural contrast to the historic townscapes and the erosion-shaped rocks of the Sidobre.
