Andillac combines a distinctive literary heritage with trails through a karst landscape and opportunities to learn about winemaking. The Château-musée du Cayla, the Église Saint-Médard and the Mur végétal d’Andillac provide cultural and historical highlights; circular trails, mountain biking routes and organised walks appeal to other interests. These themes offer different starting points for choosing a stay: you can focus on literature, local history, landscape or sparkling wine without needing to combine the activities into a set itinerary.

Literary heritage and cultural programme

The Château-musée du Cayla in Andillac is the birthplace of Maurice de Guérin and his sister Eugénie de Guérin. The site thus connects the siblings’ names with the commune’s literary heritage. The Château-musée hosts cultural events on poetry, literature and art throughout the year. For a cultural trip, the enduring biographical connection and the events programme offer two distinct points of interest. Individual programmes may change; check the dates if a particular event is important to your stay.

Church and vertical garden

The Mur végétal d’Andillac is located at the foot of the Église Saint-Médard. Patrick Blanc created the vertical garden in 1997; it is one of the first vertical gardens he designed. The present church building was erected around 1872. This brings together 19th-century architectural history and garden art from 1997. A vertical garden uses a vertical surface for plants instead of a ground-level flowerbed; this explains the distinctive form of the Mur végétal. Those interested in architecture and design can consider both features when exploring the church.

Trails through Andillac

The Le sentier du Cayla circular trail starts and ends at the Château-musée du Cayla in Andillac. The Château-musée is therefore not only a literary landmark, but also the starting and finishing point of a circular trail. In the karst area along the Sentier du Cayla, limestone outcrops feature large cracks or cavities. This adds a geological perspective to the area’s cultural history: those interested in the landscape can also look out for the limestone formations along the trail.

The Circuit VTT 12 Chemin de la Vère au Saint-Hussou mountain biking route passes through Andillac. Compared with the Sentier du Cayla, the way of travelling is different too: the Sentier starts and ends at the Château-musée, while the mountain biking circuit runs through the commune. The Vivre à Andillac association also organises walks for everyone, offering a chance to discover the landscapes of the Gaillacois wine-growing area and the surrounding trails.

Winemaking at Domaine de Peyres-Combe

Domaine de Peyres-Combe in Andillac offers a demonstration of disgorging and a presentation of the entire production process for Friselis de Peyres-combe. This sparkling wine is made using the Méthode ancestrale. There is also a question-and-answer session in the vineyards and cellar. The offering thus includes both an explanation of the production process and the opportunity to talk in two specific locations. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check in advance whether the demonstration, presentation and question-and-answer session are available during your visit.
