At Cap’Découverte, Le Garric brings together marked trails, nature interpretation on the site of a former open-pit coal mine, and traces of its mining history. It is also home to a cultural venue and a trail that combines geoscience, energy history and augmented reality. This offers several distinct focuses for planning a trip: outdoor activities, a look at how the site has been transformed, and cultural and industrial themes.

Trails for different activities

Cap’Découverte in Le Garric offers 45 kilometres of marked trails for hiking and mountain biking. There are also 35 kilometres of paved paths for bicycles, scooters and roller skates. The options therefore differ both in surface and in the activities they are designed for. When planning, you can consider whether you would rather travel on foot or on wheels. The distances provide a clear overview of the two trail options without combining them into a single type of route.

Natural surroundings and transformation

Cap’Découverte is located on the site of a former open-pit coal mine, which has been transformed into a biodiverse natural area. The Cap’Biodiversité trail focuses on the ecological restoration of the site. It also invites visitors to observe wildlife and identify plant species. In this way, the trail connects the history of the site’s transformation with specific nature-related topics. Unlike the information about trail distances, the focus here is not on route lengths but on ecological restoration, wildlife observation and plant identification.

Mining history explored in two ways

At the Parc des Titans near Cap’Découverte, you can see monumental mining machines such as trucks, excavators and coal-mining equipment. They illustrate the industrial history of the Carmaux coal basin. The Sentier Du Charbon au Soleil in Le Garric offers a different approach: this outdoor trail combines geoscience, the history of energy and augmented reality. It starts at the roundabout by the Cap Découverte hostel. The difference lies in how the stories are presented: at the Parc des Titans, the machines themselves are the focus as tangible evidence, while the Sentier combines geoscience and energy history with augmented reality.

Culture at Cap’Découverte

The Maison de la Musique near Cap’Découverte is a venue for artistic development, cultural education and cultural outreach. Its two halls differ in size and use. The large hall has seating for 600 or standing room for 1,200; the smaller, flexibly used hall has seating for 100 to 170. The capacities therefore describe two different options: the large hall can be arranged for seated or standing audiences, while the smaller hall is noted for its flexible use. In terms of Le Garric’s attractions, this cultural venue complements the themes of nature and mining history with artistic development and cultural education.
