Garrevaques offers several different reasons to visit: the architectural history of the Château de Garrevaques, a 56-kilometre circular cycling route, and excursion destinations in the surrounding area. The château has passed through several historical phases, while the cycling route provides a clear indication of its scale in terms of distance and elevation gain. There are also participatory workshops on the French way of life and activities at Saint-Ferréol. Depending on whether culture, cycling or a trip to the water is your priority, you can plan your visit around different highlights.

A château with a history spanning several phases

The Château de Garrevaques was built in the mid-15th century. After suffering damage during the Wars of Religion, it was remodelled; during the French Revolution, the building burned down, and around 1800 it was partially rebuilt. Renovation work in 1862 shaped its present-day appearance, including slate roofs and a facade finished with faux brickwork. The features of its current appearance therefore belong to a later phase than its original construction; at the same time, the fire was followed not by a complete new build but by a partial reconstruction.

The château’s Salon adds a distinctive art-historical feature: the panoramic wallpaper cycle “Les amours de Psyché et Cupidon”. By decree of 30 May 2016, the Salon and this cycle were listed as a historic monument. This protected status applies specifically to the Salon and should be distinguished from the longer history of the château building. For visitors interested in cultural history, the room adds a clearly identified interior and a specific work to the story of the building’s exterior.

Cycling with clear figures

The “Entre Plaine et coteaux du Lauragais” circular cycling route is 56 kilometres long and has 733 metres of elevation gain. Distance and elevation gain describe different aspects: the kilometre figure gives the route length, while the elevation figure indicates the ascent over the circuit. If you include the ride in your day’s plans, take both figures into account. One of the route’s sights is the Pigeonnier de Garrevaques. So, as well as its route details, the circuit has a named cultural point of interest.

Workshops on the French way of life

My French Way of Life offers participatory workshops on the French way of life. Topics include gastronomy, oenology, business etiquette, general knowledge and savoir-être. The range therefore spans everything from food and wine to social etiquette and general-interest subjects; the programme is not limited to a single culinary activity. If you are planning to attend a specific session, check the dates and availability before booking.

Excursions in the surrounding area

There are five mountain lakes in the wider area. Saint-Ferréol is one of them and is located six kilometres away. Swimming and walks along the Rigole de Pierre Paul Riquet are possible there. At Saint-Ferréol, you can choose between spending time in the water and taking a walk along the Rigole. This offers another way to plan a day out besides the circular cycling route.

Accommodation with a spa and regional cuisine

Le Pavillon du Château offers the professional spa “Les Soins de Colette” in the grounds of an 18th-century château and also has a restaurant serving regional cuisine. This adds wellness and regional food as specific options for your stay. If you plan to enjoy either, check in advance on current access arrangements for the spa or restaurant.
