Paulinet: Landscape and Heritage

Paulinet appeals to travelers who want to experience both its landscape and local history. Key features include wooded valleys, the Sentier des Bergers and the Château de Paulin. Each offers a different focus: a specific trail, a distinctive valley landscape and a historic building. You can tailor your trip to nature, architectural history or a combination of these interests.

Landscape and the Sentier des Bergers

Paulinet has deeply cut, wooded valleys, including the valleys of the Dadou, Oulas, Assou and Ambias. The landscape also includes springs, rivers, rocks and meadows. These wooded ravines, waterways and open meadows provide a distinct focus alongside the commune’s historic heritage.

The Sentier des Bergers is free to access and open year-round. Since operating information may change seasonally, check the latest details before setting out. The trail passes through the village of Notre Dame d’Ourtiguet and offers exceptional views of the Château de Paulin along the way. It combines a specific hiking route with views of one of Paulinet’s most distinctive buildings, without requiring a public tour of the château.

The Château de Paulin

The Château de Paulin rises more than 100 meters above the Oulas gorges and is an important part of the commune’s heritage. Its oldest section is the west wing, dating from the 15th to 16th centuries and ending in a tower. Its architectural history gives the château a different focus from the views offered along the Sentier des Bergers.

The Château de Paulin is not open to the public for visits. Since access status may change, check again before your trip. Do not plan to visit the building’s interior as a public attraction; views of the château are a separate feature of the Sentier des Bergers.

Churches, Art and Mining History

Sculpture also has a specific connection to Paulinet. Notre-Dame d’Ourtiguet is one of the commune’s churches that house sculptures by Laclau. Pierre-Paul Laclau (1840–1908), creator of numerous wood carvings, came from the parish of Notre-Dame d’Ourtiguet in Paulinet. The church and the artist’s biography add a distinct art-historical dimension to the area’s history.

Another historical focus is Saint-Jean-de-Jeannes. It is a very old mining site at the confluence of the valleys of the Dadou, Ambias and Ambiasselle. Here, landscape and mining history come together, adding another theme to the architectural and artistic history surrounding the château and Notre-Dame d’Ourtiguet. If you choose Paulinet for its different historical connections, you can explore three clearly distinct interests: a historic building, church sculptures and an old mining site.
