Get to know Frausseilles through the Église Saint-Pierre and the fort, places where the histories of the church and its defences are closely intertwined. There is also a winery visit as an alternative focus: Domaine du Comte de Thun offers tours where visitors can discover the estate and its wines. Travellers can choose between an interest in cultural history and a wine-related visit—or make room for both during their stay.

The Église Saint-Pierre and its architectural history

The Église Saint-Pierre was the seigneurial church of Frausseilles. The first evidence of the settlement dates back to the 13th century. Amarens was the church’s annex parish. The church’s history therefore encompasses both an early reference to Frausseilles and a specific ecclesiastical affiliation.

The tower is fortified at its base, has a ribbed vault and transitions to an octagonal plan. Octagonal means eight-sided; here, the term describes the change to this ground-plan shape. A spiral staircase provides access to the tower. The tabernacle is also part of the church’s heritage: it dates from the time of Louis XIV. This historical reference adds another chapter to the church’s history, complementing the records of the settlement dating back to the Middle Ages.

The fort: layout, fortification and defensive function

Frausseilles Fort comprised a tower, ditches and a castle gate. The complex occupied an approximately rectangular area, about 43 metres long and just under 30 metres wide. These approximate dimensions give an idea of its shape without specifying the sides as exact measurements.

In the second half of the 14th century, the fortifications were strengthened for defence in the context of the Hundred Years’ War. Frausseilles was among the villages of Cordes designated “guet et de garde”; in 1658, the village was taken by Protestant troops. The 14th-century fortification work and the event of 1658 thus belong to different periods in the village’s history.

The Église Saint-Pierre was incorporated into the fort’s defensive system. The fort served as a communal refuge for the inhabitants of the settlement and for the vast majority of residents in the surrounding countryside. Its function therefore extended beyond the settlement itself, encompassing a large part of the rural population.
