Moulin-Mage’s history spans from a Neolithic statue-menhir to cars from the 20th century. It also includes churches from the 19th century, a place name with Occitan roots and a Roman road that ran through the area. These themes take you through different chapters of the town’s history: from early farming communities to church architecture and automotive history.
Landscape, Place Name and Historic Route
Moulin-Mage lies at the foot of Montalet, which the tourism office describes as the highest point in the Tarn département. The name Moulin-Mage derives from the Occitan expression “Molin Magèr,” meaning “the large mill.” The name thus brings together a connection to the landscape and a linguistic trace. A road built by the Romans between Béziers and Cahors also ran through the Moulin-Mage area. It adds a historic route and another point of reference to the town’s history.
Menhirs and Regional Prehistory
The Statue-menhir de Rieuviel (2) was carved from a block of diorite or rhyolite. It remains standing at the southern entrance to the hamlet and is privately owned. Another named monument is the Menhir du Vacant, considered an impressive relic of the Neolithic period. Their materials, locations and dating give each of these stone monuments its own connection to prehistory.
The archaeological context extends beyond individual monuments. The region around Moulin-Mage has been inhabited for more than 5,000 years; Neolithic statue-menhirs bear witness here to the first farming communities. This regional perspective connects the named monuments with the longer history of settlement and early agriculture. This period reaches far beyond the churches of the 19th century.
Churches from the 19th Century
The Church of Notre-Dame de Moulin-Mage dates from 1836. The Church of Saint-Hilaire in Cabannes dates from 1837. The one-year difference allows for a precise comparison: both churches belong to the same period of the 19th century, while their names reflect their different connections to place. Together, they complement the much older prehistory with a clearly dated architectural history.
Automotive History: Plan Your Visit
The Musée de l’auto ancienne offers a different historical focus. Its private collection includes around twenty cars dating from the 1920s to the 1970s. The collection spans several decades, and the approximate number of vehicles is part of its description. It also includes oil cans, enamel signs on the subject of automobiles and old petrol pumps. The collection therefore comprises both vehicles and other automobile-related objects.
A prior appointment is essential for a visit: the Musée de l’auto ancienne can only be visited by prior arrangement. Confirm your appointment before you visit. This lets you include the car collection as a separate stop, alongside the prehistoric monuments and churches, which place Moulin-Mage and Cabannes in a different historical context.
