Ferrières offers two distinct ways to explore: the history of the Château and the Musée du Protestantisme, and a hike along the Sentier des bergers to the Roc de Peyremourou. The museum spans five centuries thematically, while the hike is described with a specific route and duration. This lets you weigh up a cultural focus against a clearly defined trail without committing to a set day’s itinerary.

The Château, the Seigneurie and different dates

The Château de Ferrières was partially classified as a historic monument on 10 May 1988. Its construction history is less certain: Guillaume Guilhot probably built or rebuilt it in the first half of the 16th century, but there is no historical evidence to support this attribution. Thus, a precisely dated partial classification and an explicitly probable attribution of its construction stand side by side. One concerns a later status, the other a possible date of origin.

The history of Ferrières also includes the Seigneurie, first mentioned in a document dating from 1276. This date marks the Seigneurie’s first mention, not the construction of the Château. The documentary reference, the probable construction period and the 1988 classification are therefore three distinct historical points of reference.

Five centuries at the Musée du Protestantisme

The Musée du Protestantisme – De la Réforme à la Laïcité was founded in 1968 and has been a Musée de France since 2003. Its exhibition takes visitors through five centuries of the history of Protestantism, religious pluralism, tolerance and secularism. Its thematic scope therefore extends beyond a single period and links religious history with social issues. Alongside the Château’s history, the museum offers a distinct cultural focus for your trip.

The programme includes themed activities, workshops for children, conferences and temporary exhibitions. If a particular conference or temporary exhibition is important to your stay, check the dates for your travel period. This will help you plan your visit around the programme.

Hike to the Roc de Peyremourou

The Sentier des bergers is 3 km long and is listed as taking between 30 minutes and one hour. The trail leads to the Roc de Peyremourou. The stated distance and duration give the hike a clear planning framework; depending on your schedule, allow between half an hour and an hour.

There is free parking, public toilets and a picnic area at the Sentier des bergers. As information about a current tourist trail and its facilities may change, check the route details and facilities before setting out.

The Roc de Peyremourou is a former rocking stone that toppled at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1921, it was classified as a unique example in the Sidobre. The route thus combines a hike with a stated distance and a geological destination whose former nature and historical classification are also described specifically.
