Republika Srpska offers a remarkable variety of natural landscapes: at 9,870 metres, Govještica Cave is considered the longest cave; canyon sections in Tara Nature Park reach depths of up to 1,000 metres; and Sutjeska National Park is home to glacial mountain lakes. Further exploration may change the cave’s surveyed length. The mountain lakes are considered a major tourist attraction. From caves and gorges to lakes, these landscapes offer a practical starting point for planning your trip: which setting would you like to shape your stay?

Protected Areas with Diverse Landscapes

Sutjeska National Park covers 17,250 hectares. More than half of it is forested; the rest consists of pastureland, rocky terrain and mountain lakes. This means the park is not just forest, but also a transition to open and rocky landscapes. Drina National Park was established in 2017 and covers 6,315.32 hectares within the municipality of Srebrenica. The area may change if its boundaries are amended.

Prača Nature Park lies in eastern Republika Srpska, within the municipality of Rogatica. Its landscape includes a gorge-canyon valley carved by the Prača River. Orjen Nature Park in Trebinje offers a different perspective on protected areas: its preserved ecosystems are home to numerous endemic, relict and endangered species. Those interested in landscapes will find different ways to explore them—from a river valley to protected habitats.

Visitor information is also part of the nature experience. Kozara National Park was designated in 1967. At its information centre, you can find information about the park’s natural and cultural-historical values, tourist brochures, park maps and other information materials. Visitor services may change, so if you need specific information, check what is currently available in advance.

Rivers, Tours and Trails

The final 25 kilometres of the Tara River flow through the municipality of FoÄŤa. Rafting is also offered on the Tara and Drina rivers in FoÄŤa. As operations and seasons may vary, check in advance whether tours are running during your travel dates. Canyoning tours are offered in the 13-kilometre-long Hrcavka Canyon in Sutjeska National Park; here too, check availability before making plans around a tour.

The water at Perućac Lake is suitable for kayaking, and the lake is also a starting point for cruises on the Drina. The Sava River near Gradiška offers another way to enjoy the water: there is a sport-fishing stretch and opportunities for recreational kayaking. The Sava is navigable along its entire length near Gradiška.

You can also distinguish between shorter and longer routes by their exact distances. From the Dragoš Sedlo car park, a path of about 100 metres leads to a viewpoint. The 2.5-kilometre Guber Promenade winds through unspoilt natural scenery to several healing springs. Around Gradiška, there are hiking and cycling trails near picnic areas along the Sava and on Kozara. Trail maintenance and access may vary seasonally, so check conditions before setting out on a specific route.

Architecture, Remembrance and Local Cuisine

The Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad was built in the late 16th century by court architect Mimar Koca Sinan, commissioned by Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović. Its 11 stone arches span 179.5 metres. The bridge is considered an exceptional example of classical Ottoman architecture and civil engineering: its commission, design and scale give the historic structure a distinctive character.

Dobor Fortress is an older example of defensive architecture. Ivaniš Horvat built it between 1387 and 1388 as a fortification with two towers. The memorial complex commemorating the Battle of Sutjeska is also part of the tourist attractions in Sutjeska National Park. In Gradiška, the local history museum displays the permanent exhibition “Paths of Victory” as well as 4,500 different objects. Exhibitions and collections may change, so check what is currently on display before your visit.

Seasonal Events to Help Plan Your Trip

“Gastro Encounters” in Modriča takes place every May and showcases regional specialities prepared according to traditional recipes. Check the dates for the year you plan to travel. In 2022, an area of 5,036 hectares on Trebević was designated a nature park. There, walking trails are turned into ski slopes in winter—a clear change in seasonal use.
