Dera is a mountain village; most of its area lies within Kozara National Park. The Mrakovica Circular Trail loops around the memorial area and passes through dense deciduous and coniferous forest. Together with the river and gorge landscapes of the excursion areas, it provides a nature-focused setting for planning your trip. You can choose between several different highlights: a forest walk, a river or gorge landscape, and a climbing option in the nearby area.

The Mrakovica Circular Trail

The trail is 3.4 kilometres long and takes about an hour at a leisurely walking pace. It runs at an elevation of 740 to 802 metres. The length, approximate walking time and elevation range answer different planning questions: the kilometre figure describes the route, the hour indicates how long the walk takes, and the elevation shows where the trail lies.

There are rest areas along the trail with covered benches and information boards about the natural and cultural-historical values of Kozara National Park. You can take a break at the rest areas; the boards provide information about the park’s nature and cultural history. If these facilities are important to your visit, check their current condition in advance.

Wildlife in winter

Deer feeding stations can be seen along the trail; the animals come here to feed in winter. Winter is therefore the relevant season if you are interested in this wildlife. However, this does not guarantee that you will see any individual animals. Trail conditions can also vary by season. For a winter visit, you should therefore consider both the seasonal use of the feeding stations and the trail conditions.

River and gorge in Dera

Two other excursion areas in Dera offer different landscape highlights. Pilanište is by the Kozaračka River; Kotlovača is in the gorge of the stream of the same name. This gives you a clear contrast between a riverside setting and a gorge landscape. If you would rather explore a river setting or a gorge during your trip, the two places offer different landscapes to experience.

A 2023 article mentions a mountain lodge run by the “Klekovača” mountaineering club from Prijedor in the Kotlovača excursion area. If you would like to include the lodge in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently operating and open to the public.

Climbing routes nearby

In the area near the destination, equipped climbing routes of up to 60 metres in height are available at the Zečiji kamen rock face. Alongside the circular trail, this offers a different kind of activity as a reason for your trip. You can assess Mrakovica as a walk based on its length and duration; at Zečiji kamen, the height of the climbing routes is the specific measure to consider. These answer two different questions when making your choice: what timeframe suits the walk, and are you also interested in climbing?

Choose your focus

You can base your decision on different questions: Would you like a walk with a specified length and duration, are you especially interested in a river or gorge landscape, or would you like climbing to be part of the trip? Mrakovica, Pilanište and Kotlovača, as well as the climbing routes at Zečiji kamen, each offer a different highlight. This lets you choose Dera according to the theme you want to shape your trip around.
