Foča connects the town center with river and mountain landscapes across the municipality. The last 25 kilometers of the Tara River’s course run through the municipality; the town is also home to cultural sites such as the Church of Saint Sava. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these different scales in mind: cultural sites are in town, while nature activities take place across the municipality or in Sutjeska National Park.
Rivers and Activities in the Foča Area
The Foča municipality is known for rafting on the Tara and Drina rivers. The rivers in the area also offer opportunities for canyoning and kayaking. In total, the region has 17 rivers and streams with canyons, clear water and fast currents. Fishing is another activity: within the municipality, people fish in the Drina, Tara, Piva, Ćehotina, Sutjeska and Bistrica rivers.
One specific canyoning tour runs through the Hrčavka Canyon in Sutjeska National Park. The route is 13 kilometers long, takes five to six hours and is considered moderately difficult. Its length, duration and difficulty rating give you a clear framework for planning this tour as a separate part of your itinerary.
Mountain Landscapes and Sutjeska National Park
The Foča municipality includes high mountain ranges in the Dinaric Alps, including Maglić, Zelengora, Vučevo, Volujak, Bioč and Ljubišnja. They are considered a challenge for hikers and mountaineers. Perućica, a primeval forest covering about 1,230 hectares, lies within Sutjeska National Park. The 75-meter-high Skakavac waterfall is also located there.
The central part of the national park is about 20 kilometers from Foča and can be reached via the main road Belgrade–Višegrad–Foča–Tjentište–Trebinje–Dubrovnik. Bicycles can be rented at the park’s tourist information center; a paved route through nature stretches for 48 kilometers. The earth pyramids are located in Pirni Do, at the ninth kilometer of the old road toward Miljevina and Sarajevo. The natural process that forms them is still ongoing.
