Kotor Varoš can be explored through a range of themes: the Vrbanja and its riverbanks, the natural beauty of nearby Cvrcka Canyon, and cultural events and history. When planning, it is worth distinguishing places in town from destinations in the surrounding area. This lets you tailor your stay around the river, nature, or culture.
Cvrcka Canyon, Waterfalls and River
In the area around Kotor Varoš, Cvrcka Canyon features numerous cascades, potholes, waterfalls, and caves. A hiking trail runs the entire length of the canyon, passing through picturesque landscapes and by authentic watermills. Trail conditions and access to the mills may change. Also nearby, Skakavac Waterfall plunges from a height of about 20 metres. It is the largest and best-known waterfall in the area; local environmentalists and mountaineers have prepared access to it. Check trail conditions before your visit.
Within the municipality, the fishing area includes the Vrbanja and its many tributaries, which are rich in fish, especially brown trout. Fishing regulations, seasons, and water conditions may change. For summer recreation, there is the “Brana” outdoor swimming pool in Kotor Varoš; its facilities may change. Kupalište Bjeline is located on the Vrbanja, where swimming conditions and water quality may vary. A sloping footpath to the Vrbanja was planned as an access route. Check current conditions before visiting.
Riverside Promenades in Town
The 215-metre-long “Brana” promenade had been prepared for sport and recreation and was in use in February 2024. It was also available to fishing clubs, sports clubs, environmental groups, and other associations for programme activities. Gradsko šetalište runs along the banks of the Vrbanja as a riverside promenade and was reserved exclusively for pedestrians in 2020. At the time, it had 11 benches and 20 concrete waste bins. Check conditions and access on site.
Folklore, History and Food
The “Sabor folklora” is a traditional cultural event in Kotor Varoš. At one edition, 11 cultural and arts associations performed; participants paraded through Kotor Varoš to the grounds of the Centre for Culture, Sport and Information. The number of participants and the programme may vary from one edition to another. The medieval Kotor Fortress is part of the area’s history. It stands above the left bank of the Vrbanja and above the Bobas River. It was an important stronghold of the Jajce Banate and protected the approach to Jajce from the northwest.
Visual arts and culinary events are also part of the cultural offering. The Likovna kolonija is a traditional visual arts event. At the “Kotor Varoš 2024” exhibition, 23 works created during that year’s Likovna kolonija were displayed in the gallery space of the cinema hall. The Kotlićijada is a recurring culinary event; its 13th edition took place in 2022. The second edition of the “Dolinom Vrbanje” Rakija Festival was held in July 2026. Tasting sessions featuring a variety of homemade rakijas were available at exhibition stands, alongside insights into the regional traditions of fruit growing and rakija production.
