In Šipovo, a range of travel interests come together: you can explore river landscapes, discover hiking trails or learn about the history of Glogovac Monastery. When choosing where to stay, it is worth deciding first what matters most to you. Each place and theme has its own appeal; the location details below can help you plan accordingly.
Janj: spring, karst valley and waterfalls
The source of the Janj River can only be reached on foot and is suitable for walks and picnics. The Janjske otoke are a separate destination: they lie beside the main road from Šipovo to Kupres, four kilometres downstream from the spring. The karst valley there is about one kilometre long and about 300 metres wide. Its landscape is shaped by several cascades and waterfalls. Within the Janj area, you can therefore choose between a destination accessible explicitly on foot and a valley with a specific location by the road.
Janj’s natural heritage is also part of its significance. Prašuma Janj is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”. UNESCO’s decision to add Prašuma Janj as a new component dates to 2021. This offers another perspective alongside the river spring and karst valley: you can connect nature-related interests with the international World Heritage context without treating the individual places as one and the same.
Pliva: fly fishing and activities by the river
The Pliva River rises in the western part of the municipality of Šipovo, 8.5 kilometres from the town centre. Its three springs lie at an altitude of 481 metres. For fly fishers, the Pliva offers a diverse fish population and good opportunities along an accessible 33-kilometre stretch of river. May is considered the preferred month, as large mayflies and stoneflies are common then; these seasonal conditions can vary from year to year.
Ada Sokočnica, a developed recreation area for outings and summer outdoor activities, lies by the river. A hiking trail also starts there. When planning, you can therefore choose between fishing on the Pliva and a stay focused on outdoor activities or hiking.
Hiking trails and other natural attractions
Šipovo has numerous cycling and hiking trails through distinctive landscapes. One hiking trail runs through Janj Canyon; another starts at Ada Sokočnica. In the canyon of the Sokočnica River, photo safaris and hikes are among the activities offered along the routes. Check conditions for these activities locally. Vaganska Cave is 19 kilometres from Šipovo, near the village of Vagan on the road to Kupres.
Glogovac Monastery and history
The medieval Serbian Orthodox Glogovac Monastery is dedicated to Saint George the Great Martyr. It is located in Janj, in the canyon of the Glogovac stream between the hills of the Gorice range. The monastery was founded in the first half of the 14th century during the reigns of Kings Dragutin and Milutin. Visitors wishing to explore cultural history further will find a clearly defined historical focus here, with a specific timeframe.
Other traces of history point to different themes. Soko Grad is a medieval fortress known as the last refuge of the Bosnian king Stjepan Tomašević. The historic salt road also passed through Šipovo; its remains are still visible today. Both sites complement a visit to the monastery with stories of fortifications and trade, without implying that they form a single route.
Events and culinary traditions
The Janjski Sabor is held every year at Glogovac Monastery on All Saints’ Sunday; the tradition dates back to the time of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Dani Šipova is a traditional event featuring a programme of sports, culture and entertainment, held every year in July. The traditional Janjski višeboj, a sporting and cultural event, is also held in July in Strojice. Check the latest dates before travelling and, for Dani Šipova, consult the programme as well.
Janj’s culinary specialities include braided Janj cheese, Gužvaš cheese and Janj kajmak. At the Pitijada, participants compete to roll out dough quickly and prepare pita. If you plan to include this event in your trip, it is advisable to check the latest festival programme in advance.
