Five sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. They range from a bridge and historic urban areas to forests and Vjetrenica Cave, which was added in 2024. The national parks also offer their own distinctive features: forests, river canyons and mountain landscapes give trips a variety of themes.

World Heritage, Urban History and Traditions

The UNESCO sites include the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad, the Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar and the Stećci Medieval Tombstone Graveyards. The Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe are also included as a natural World Heritage site. Vjetrenica Cave in Ravno has been part of this selection since its addition in 2024.

The intangible cultural heritage also includes various traditions: Sevdalinka, a traditional urban folk song, was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024. Zmijanje embroidery has been on this list since 2014. In Počitelj, a fortified urban complex preserves medieval and Ottoman building phases; the historic ensemble has been preserved in its original form. The natural and architectural ensemble of Jajce includes a fortress, city walls and towers on a rocky slope. It is bounded to the southwest by the bed of the Pliva River and to the southeast and east by the Vrbas River.

National Parks and Striking Landscapes

In the southeast, on the border with Montenegro, lies Sutjeska National Park. It covers 16,052.34 hectares, more than 66 percent of which is forested. The park includes Maglić, described as the country’s highest peak at 2,386 metres. The 76-metre-high Skakavac waterfall is located in the Perućica area. Strict rules apply to visitor access to the Perućica reserve: access is controlled and limited to designated trails. Check the current conditions before travelling there.

Una National Park lies in the west of the country on the border with Croatia and covers 19,800 hectares. It includes canyon sections of the Una and Unac rivers. The Una, Unac and Krka rivers feature cascades, rapids, waterfalls, tufa caves, tufa islands and canyon gorges. At Martin Brod, a series of waterfalls and cascades extends over 800 metres and descends 54 metres. It is considered the largest and longest waterfall complex in the national park.

Drina National Park protects the Pančić spruce, an endemic Tertiary relict species, along the middle course of the Drina in the east of the country. Blidinje Lake in Blidinje Nature Park offers a different kind of landscape: at an elevation of 1,182 metres, it covers about three square kilometres and is considered the country’s largest mountain lake by area. In the Cvrsnica mountains, Diva Grabovica Gorge is about six kilometres long and between 1,200 and 1,500 metres deep. These figures illustrate the varied scale of the landscape, from protected forest areas to a deeply incised gorge.

Caves, Rivers and Mountain Trails

Activities also vary by location. Una National Park offers rafting, kayaking and canoeing, canyon hiking, hiking, mountain biking, and sport and recreational fly-fishing; providers and conditions may vary. In the protected Bijambare landscape, the Srednja Bijambarska Cave is equipped, lit and open to visitors. The visitor route passes through four decorated cave chambers and is about 500 metres long. Access conditions may change; check before your visit.

At Vjetrenica Cave, a guided 10-kilometre round-trip cycling tour is offered along the Ćiro railway line and the trails in Popovo Polje. Reservations and tour operations may change; check the latest information in advance. A different time frame is given for a trip on the Hutovo Blato waterway: the three-hour guided boat trip starts in Karaotok and travels through the Sun Channel, the Krupa River and Lake Deransko, as well as through canals to Lakes Oraha and Drijena. Excursion arrangements may also change.

For mountain enthusiasts, the Via Dinarica route BH-W-06 describes a crossing of Prenj from west to south. The mountain route crosses the summit of Zelena Glava at 2,155 metres. Trail and mountain conditions may change; check them before setting out.
