Prnjavor offers a close look at church architecture and cultural diversity: a Ukrainian church built in 1911–1912 is considered the first brick-built Ukrainian church in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Orthodox Church of St. George the Great Martyr combines an older building history with an iconostasis whose artist and year of creation are known.

Churches and Art History

The Ukrainian Church of the Transfiguration was built between 1911 and 1912. Its interior is designed in the traditional Ukrainian style and includes a multi-tiered wooden iconostasis in the Neo-Baroque style. The construction period and design give the church a distinctive architectural character.

The Orthodox Church of St. George the Great Martyr was built between 1884 and 1887 and consecrated on 18 September 1888. Its artistic features can also be dated and attributed to a named artist: Teodosije Marković made and painted the iconostasis in 1888. Visitors who focus their trip on churches and their furnishings will find two distinct building histories here, as well as a specific work of art with a named creator.

The harem of the town mosque is also part of the town’s protected religious history: it was declared a national monument and placed under state protection in 2003.

Museum and Cultural Diversity

The Ukrainian church’s parish complex includes a museum. It displays items brought by settlers, as well as other historical treasures. The building of the district prefecture in Prnjavor is designated as the Zavičajni muzej Prnjavor. Both offer a distinct point of interest for travelers interested in history and cultural heritage.

The Prnjavor region is called “Little Europe” because of the many peoples and nationalities living there. This diversity is also reflected in the municipality of Prnjavor’s festival of minorities, which bears the same name. At “Little Europe,” traditional crafts and specialties from the traditional cuisines of the participating countries are presented.

Cultural and artistic institutions from across Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina take part in the festival, along with institutions from countries in the region and the countries of origin of minority communities. The countries named include the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and Ukraine. Check the exact festival dates for your travel period; the program may vary from one edition to the next.

More Cultural Attractions

The Lipizzaner stud farm “Vučijak” offers a special connection between local history and horse breeding. It was established in April 1946 by a decree of the Ministry of Defence. Its institutional history therefore dates back to the early post-war period. Along with the churches and the festival, the stud farm provides another way to explore Prnjavor, so a trip need not be limited to sacred architecture or events.

Lake, River and Trail

Fishing at Lake Drenova is done from the shore; all other forms of fishing are prohibited. The lake is considered a special fishing area and is widely known for its trophy catfish and carp. If you plan to fish there, check the regulations again using local information before your trip.

A recurring seasonal natural phenomenon can be observed in mid-August on and above the Ukrina: swarms of mayflies appear in the morning and evening. The timing and times of day make this a natural attraction with a clear connection to late-summer travel planning.

For a longer route, an existing 18-kilometre trail leads from Lake Drenova to the historic Stuplje Monastery. The named endpoints and trail length help distinguish this option from individual cultural or nature attractions. If you plan to take the trail, check the trail conditions in advance.
