In Mistelbach, changing museum themes meet buildings with a long history and cellar lanes that tell the story of winemaking. This lets you shape your stay around a wide range of interests: exhibitions and archaeological topics, historic architectural details, or insights into regional wine culture.
Museum and Cultural History
Every year, the MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach focuses on a different theme from human history and presents changing special exhibitions. The program is complemented by talks from renowned experts, children’s workshops and guided tours. If you are interested in a particular type of program, check the current schedule before your trip. The M-ZONE at MAMUZ in Mistelbach is an exhibition space for art and culture.
A different archaeological focus awaits you at MAMUZ Schloss Asparn/Zaya, where prehistory, early history and medieval archaeology are presented in an interactive, modern way. The two MAMUZ offerings thus take different approaches: the Mistelbach museum presents changing themes from human history each year, while the castle covers several archaeological periods.
The Baroque Schlössl is also an important part of the cultural offering. Since 1980, it has been used as a cultural center for smaller events, including poetry readings, concerts and exhibitions. Two very different details illustrate Mistelbach’s architectural history. The Romanesque charnel house dates from 1200; its tympanum above the entrance depicts two dragons holding a human figure in their grasp. The Elisabeth Church was rebuilt as a brick building with glazed tiles and consecrated as a hospital chapel in 1905.
Another trace of history leads underground: during wartime, the passage of the Schwedenkeller served as an escape route. Together with the visible architectural details, it offers a different perspective on the town’s history than the exhibitions and events.
Cellar Lanes and Winemaking
Around 90 cellars line both sides of a hollow in the terrain along the Beim Baumkreis cellar lane. An old tree press can be viewed in the middle of the lane. The Baumkreis Veltlinerland offers insights into the winemaking tradition, including a barefoot path and a show vineyard featuring various Veltliner varieties.
The time of year also matters when it comes to tasting: in autumn, you can sample the main grape varieties of the Weinviertel in the wine-variety tasting garden—Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Welschriesling, Zweigelt and Blauer Portugieser. The iKu cellar at Baumkreis Veltlinerland serves regional delicacies and drinks. A self-service cellar on the Beim Baumkreis lane also offers regional delicacies and local wines.
Nature and Trails
The Zayawiesen nature reserve is one of the last wet meadow areas in the Weinviertel and provides a refuge for numerous rare animals and plants. Locals use the area for running, cycling, walking with a stroller or dog, and birdwatching. These different uses make the Zayawiesen relevant to a range of interests without giving them all the same focus: exercise and nature observation sit alongside the chance to see a protected habitat.
Another nature destination in the Weinviertel is Leiser Berge Nature Park, the region’s only nature park. It has a well-developed network of hiking trails and many opportunities to observe nature. Around Mistelbach, cycling routes range from easy to somewhat more challenging. When planning, you can therefore choose between hiking, cycling and nature observation, rather than trying to fit all the activities into a set itinerary.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
Mistelbach is on the S2 suburban railway line from Vienna to Laa an der Thaya. The Zayataler rail taxi departs from the “Mistelbach Interspar” stop; check operating days before your trip. Your choice of accommodation may depend on these different interests: would you like to focus mainly on museums and cultural history, or are you more interested in winemaking, cellar lanes and nature? The sights and activities offer several themes for your stay without prescribing a particular itinerary.
