Altlichtenwarth combines a distinctive history of viticulture with sweeping views across the northeastern Weinviertel. There are a variety of ways to explore as you plan your trip: take a walk around Hutsaulberg, visit historic buildings and explore the cellar quarter on Silberberg. You can also enjoy wine tastings and a cycling route that passes through the village.
Views and landscape
Altlichtenwarth lies in the sun-drenched hills of the northeastern Weinviertel, near the tripoint of Austria, Czechia and Slovakia. Arable farming and viticulture shape the gently rolling landscape. The observation tower on Hutsaulberg offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area: from there, you can see more than 50 villages. On a clear day, the view stretches across the northeastern Weinviertel, South Moravia and eastern Slovakia; on rare days, it even reaches as far as Schneeberg.
The panoramic view and trails on Hutsaulberg offer different experiences: from the tower, you can gaze far across the region, while the named hiking route takes you on a specific circuit with stops exploring local history. This lets you shape your visit around your interests without expecting both experiences to offer the same thing.
Church, chapel and monument
The parish church of St Nicholas is a Romanesque fortified church, still surrounded by a defensive wall. Its design reflects its fortified character, and the preserved wall remains part of the church’s distinctive appearance. Those interested in historic religious buildings will find two other notable sites nearby.
East of Hutsaulberg stands Sebastian Chapel, a plague chapel at the highest point of the road to Katzelsdorf. On the road to Hausbrunn, beneath old trees, stands a statue of St John of Nepomuk. Its inscription states that the stone was erected in 1750 out of pious devotion and as an eternal vow in honour of the saint. Each of the church, chapel and monument tells a different part of the village’s religious history.
Viticulture and cellar quarter
Viticulture in Altlichtenwarth dates back to the 14th century. Today, mainly white wines are produced, especially Weinviertel Grüner Veltliner. The cellar quarter on Silberberg is a distinctive part of this history of viticulture: it extends along Silberberg over seven tiers. If you want to explore the built character of this wine-growing village, you can discover its local character here, away from the viewpoints.
At Pforakeller, a representative wine-cellar venue and Heuriger (traditional wine tavern) run by the local winegrowers’ association, you can taste quality wines from Altlichtenwarth. If you plan a tasting, check the current opening hours in advance. The cellar lane and Pforakeller offer different insights: one showcases the historic cellar quarter, while the other offers the chance to sample local wines.
On foot or by bike
The “Around Hutsaulberg” hiking trail is 7.5 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of around 130 metres. These two key figures can help you fit the circuit into your day’s plans. Along the way, the trail passes the Jagateich spring, which flows with particularly iron-rich water. The route also has 16 stops with QR codes providing information about local history. This means the hike takes in both the landscape and local history.
The Weinradroute Welschriesling offers another way to explore the area by bike. It runs through Altlichtenwarth northwest towards Herrnbaumgarten. The hiking trail and cycling route are separate options; choose between a circuit with an elevation gain and a route that continues through the village.
Winter option and directions
In winter, the Schwemm, the village pond, is used as an ice rink. Whether this is possible depends on winter conditions. This is therefore a key consideration when planning a winter activity.
The Altlichtenwarth rest area is also a useful landmark for travellers: it lies outside the village on the road to Bernhardsthal and directly on the Liechtenstein cycling route.
