In Mistelbach, changing museum themes meet historic buildings and cultural offerings with a range of focuses. There is also the Dionysus Trail through vineyard and orchard landscapes, as well as seasonal wine tastings. When planning your stay, you can decide whether museums, local history or the landscape should take centre stage.
Museums and Cultural Programme
Each year, the MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach dedicates its changing special exhibitions to a different theme from human history. The programme also includes lectures by renowned experts, children’s workshops and guided tours. The changing annual focus sets the programme apart from one with a fixed exhibition theme.
Another place to visit is the nitsch museum, one of the largest monographic museums in the Republic of Austria. The museums therefore offer different points of focus: the themes at MAMUZ change from year to year, while the nitsch museum is classified as a monographic museum. Those interested in guided tours will find options in Mistelbach for individuals, groups, children and school classes. Dates are arranged individually.
Local History and Architecture
A classic city tour covers Mistelbach’s general history and includes, among other places, the main square, the Baroque Schlössl, Kirchengasse and the parish church. These stops bring together different facets of the town; further historical details can also be explored individually.
The Baroque Schlössl was probably built around 1727 and is attributed to the school of Lukas von Hildebrandt. The ossuary, also known as the “Beinhaus,” stands on Mistelbach’s Kirchenberg. It was built around 1200 and has Romanesque windows and a Baroque roof. The chapel of the Barnabite College is one of Lower Austria’s great artistic treasures.
The Schwedenkeller also connects history with cultural use today: its underground passage served as an escape route during wartime, and the cellar hosts numerous cultural events. The war memorial “Christus mit gefallenem Soldaten” (“Christ with Fallen Soldier”) commemorates another chapter in the town’s history. It was inaugurated at the Heroes’ Cemetery on 17 June 1923; an ecumenical service is held there every year on All Saints’ Day.
The Lad-Umtragen procession of the Mistelbach Hauerzunft is part of local tradition and is recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of Austria. The Hauerzunft was founded in 1698. Those interested in how such handed-down customs have developed will encounter a different form of history here than at buildings or exhibitions.
Vineyard Landscapes and Seasonal Experiences
The Dionysus Trail is Mistelbach’s first panoramic trail. It leads through vineyards and orchards, past livestock pastures and along the enclosure for free-range pigs. The trail therefore takes in not only vineyards, but also orchards and grazing areas.
The trail includes a wine-grape variety garden. In autumn, visitors can taste important Weinviertel grape varieties there: Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Welschriesling, Zweigelt and Blauer Portugieser. The tasting is therefore a seasonal activity. Another link to art among the vineyards is the ZWISCHENRAUM art site, which brings together Heinz Cibulka’s picture frieze and Klaus Sattmann’s “Container.”
Getting There and Planning Your Visit
Mistelbach and the cadastral communities of Paasdorf, Siebenhirten, Hörersdorf and Frättingsdorf are on the S2 suburban railway line between Vienna and Laa an der Thaya. Bicycles can usually be taken on board without difficulty; check the current railway conditions before travelling.
Mistelbach is accessible by train or bus for the Kultur-Genuss-Route, followed by a short walk to the starting point. The route is not signposted as a standalone loop. The GPX route file or PDF document is therefore recommended for navigation; also check connections before your trip.
Please contact the Mistelbach Municipal Museum Archive by telephone in advance to arrange a visit. The permanent exhibition in premises near the Jewish cemetery tells the story of Mistelbach’s former Jewish community up to 1938. Please confirm the current visiting arrangements in advance. This makes it easier to distinguish scheduled activities from visits with special arrangements when planning your trip.
