Pottenhofen can be explored for travel planning through two clear focal points: cycling connections and local history. In addition, there are cellars arranged in terraces at the edge of the forest in the Pottenau area, around 500 metres from the town. If you are planning a stay, it helps to distinguish between a focus on cycling routes and an interest in the parish church and historic buildings. The following places and routes show what Pottenhofen offers visitors with different interests.

Cycling connections with different route links

Several routes offer different points of reference. The Iron Curtain Trail – EuroVelo 13 runs via Wildendürnbach and Pottenhofen to Mikulov. The cycling route Mikulov – Ottenthal – Kleinschweinbarth – Falkenstein – Zlabern – Staatz – Kottingneusiedl – Neudorf bei Staatz – Wildendürnbach – Pottenhofen – Mikulov lists Pottenhofen as an access point. This distinction is useful when choosing a route: the Iron Curtain Trail is described as running via Wildendürnbach to Mikulov, while the second route description explicitly names Pottenhofen as an access point.

The Veltliner Wine Cycle Route adds an approximate length and a connection to wine to these itineraries: it is around 75 kilometres long, is named after the Grüner Veltliner grape variety, and continues via Pottenhofen and Ottenthal to Falkenstein. This makes it possible to distinguish it from the aforementioned connections linked to Mikulov. The Radlerrast Pottenhofen is a self-service station on the edge of town, along the tourist cycling routes Kamp-Thaya-March (KTM), EuroVelo 13 and the cross-border “Hallo Nachbar” route. If you are planning a break there, it is best to check the current opening hours in advance.

Parish history and listed buildings

In 1783, a decree by Joseph II made Pottenhofen an independent parish. The construction of the present-day parish church was approved in 1859; its high altar comes from the Franciscan monastery in Feldsberg. The years mark different milestones: 1783, the establishment of an independent parish, and 1859, the approval of the new church. The origin of the high altar is another historical detail about the church.

In the Lower Austrian register of listed monuments dated 23 June 2026, the Catholic parish church of Saint Florian is listed as protected by ordinance. The former primary school in Pottenhofen is also included; it is protected as a listed building following a positive decision under Section 2. This means the overview of listed buildings includes not only the parish church but also a former school building. The two protection designations offer different points of interest if you are interested in Pottenhofen’s local history.

The cellars in Pottenau

Pottenhofen’s cellars are arranged in terraces at the edge of the forest in the Pottenau area, around 500 metres from the town. Their location sets them apart in terms of orientation from the Radlerrast, which is on the edge of town. Along with the cycling connections and listed buildings, the cellars add another specific place to the picture of Pottenhofen. When planning your stay, you can weigh up whether the routes, church history or location of the cellars should be its main focus.
