Pellendorf combines gently undulating terrain with several points of cultural and historical interest. The elevation varies only slightly, from 205 to 251 metres. The village is surrounded by Sandwald, Pfaffenwald, Au, Langwald, Steigwald and BrĂĽndlwald. The landscape, art and trails offer different ways to enjoy a stay in Pellendorf.

Art, Church and Rural Heritage

The high altar painting in Pellendorf parish church depicts the beheading of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Martin Johann Schmidt painted it in 1783. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands beside the castle and church; it was erected in 1750 and renovated in 1910 and 2002. The painting and statue reflect different religious themes and periods.

The Hubertus Chapel was built in 1992. Its image shows Saint Hubertus with a stag bearing a cross between its antlers. The Hegering’s Hubertus Mass is held at the chapel every year on the last Saturday in September. If this date affects when you plan to travel, check the specific event date in advance.

The historical landmarks range from the statue erected in 1750 and the altar painting created in 1783 to the chapel built in 1992. Pellendorf’s history of sacred art and architecture can thus be explored across several centuries.

The open-air museum in Pellendorf displays traditional farming equipment. This gives it a different focus from the religious artworks: agricultural tools are at the heart of the collection. If you are interested in rural heritage, you can plan a visit as a complement to seeing the altar painting, statue and chapel.

Walking and Cycling Routes

On the Gaweinstal to Pellendorf section, the Weinviertel St. Francis Way leads to the Church of St. Catherine at the castle. There is a stamping station for the St. Francis Way in front of the church. On the Pellendorf to Atzelsdorf section, passage through the park below the privately owned castle, along the deer enclosure, is permitted. Follow any current notices when passing through the park.

A circular hiking trail reaches Pellendorf after about 3 km and runs through the Kellergasse (historic wine cellar lane) towards the church and castle. The routes differ in their landmarks: the St. Francis Way includes the Gaweinstal–Pellendorf and Pellendorf–Atzelsdorf sections, while the circular trail follows the Kellergasse to the church and castle.

The Kreuzstetterweg Kellergasse is also located in the direction of Bogenneusiedl. For cycling, the Zweigelt Cycle Route connects Pellendorf to Lower Austria’s cycling network.
