Cellar Lane and Winegrowing

The 1,200-metre-long cellar lane is a distinctive feature of a stay in Großengersdorf. It is considered the longest and most photographed cellar lane in the Weinviertel. As a living testament to the region’s winemaking tradition, it allows visitors to experience the local wine culture first-hand.

Access to the cellars is limited to events or guided tours. As this arrangement may change, check the current options before your visit. Weinbau & Buschenschank Petra Messerer offers tastings by prior arrangement, including outside regular opening hours. These two wine experiences have different requirements: access to the cellars requires an event or guided tour, while tastings require a booking.

Church and Local History

The first church in Großengersdorf, probably made of wood, was built before 1339. Its Gothic presbytery—the altar area—and its fortified tower date from the late Middle Ages. The Church of the Assumption of Mary was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style in 1899. The old Gothic choir and the imposing north tower were retained; the new building was completed in 1901. This means older Gothic features stand alongside a later Neo-Gothic building phase. The term “presbytery” refers to the altar area and helps explain one of the architectural features mentioned here.

Großengersdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1114. Bernhard von Engilrichesdorf appears as a witness to a donation to Klosterneuburg Abbey. This first documented mention therefore marks a different point in time from the church’s construction history: it dates to the early 12th century, while the building phases mentioned span the late Middle Ages to the completion of the new church in 1901.

Village Culture and a Seasonal Festival

The Museum of Village Culture is housed in the former village mill. Events in Großengersdorf include a wine tasting at the village museum on Easter Monday. Check the dates before your trip if you plan to attend this seasonal event. The festival date provides a specific calendar connection to wine culture, while the museum in the former mill offers its own link to village culture.

Wetland, Hiking and Cycling Routes

A 15-hectare wetland lies in the vicinity of Großengersdorf, with the Rußbach winding through it. From Großengersdorf, you can hike through the vineyards to the Hochleithenwald, Austria’s largest oak forest. Well-maintained cycling routes lead through the gentle hills of the Weinviertel and the open expanses of the Marchfeld. There are therefore several types of landscape to choose from: the hiking destination is the Hochleithenwald; cycling routes pass through the hills of the Weinviertel and the Marchfeld. The wetland offers another natural setting in the nearby area. A wetland is a habitat shaped by water.
