Kreuzstetten combines walks through vineyards and gentle hills with historic sites and other leisure activities. Highlights range from the moated castle and churches in Nieder- and Neubau-Kreuzstetten to the wine cellar lane in Oberkreuzstetten. It is also worth taking a closer look at how to get there: Neubau-Kreuzstetten station offers train and bus connections as well as parking spaces for various modes of transport.
Local History and Churches
The moated castle and the village of Niederkreuzstetten were first mentioned in official documents in 1125. The church in Niederkreuzstetten is dedicated to Saint James and has a Gothic choir. This brings local history together with a clearly identifiable architectural feature.
Neubau-Kreuzstetten also has its own historic landmarks: a brick museum was established there after a closure. Completed in 1957, the forest chapel continues to host traditional Hubertus Masses. The building's history and this continuing tradition offer two distinct points of interest for your visit.
Walks, Hikes and the Wine Cellar Lane
In Oberkreuzstetten, vineyards, gentle hills and the well-kept wine cellar lane invite you to enjoy relaxing walks. The lane has two rows of cellars, with more than 50 cellar tunnels dug 10 to 20 metres into the hillside. The landscape is thus complemented by a striking architectural feature. Ochsenberg in Oberkreuzstetten is also home to a substantial prehistoric ring-wall complex, parts of which have four concentric rings.
Niederkreuzstetten has marked hiking trails. Guided themed hikes are also offered in Kreuzstetten, including animal, herb and legend walks. If you plan to join a guided tour, check the date in advance. Walks, marked trails and themed tours offer different ways to experience the landscape, while the ring-wall complex adds an archaeological focus.
More Leisure Activities
The OCHYS Waldfreizeitpark Kreuzstetten has seven themed climbing courses at heights of 2 to 10 metres. This gives you a specific alternative to walks and hikes if you would like to add a climbing activity to your stay. The outdoor swimming pool in Niederkreuzstetten is also part of the local offerings: it is the Parkbad Kreuzstetten, a foundation of Empress Elisabeth.
