The castle ruins, Kellergasse, parish church and several named trails give Falkenstein near Poysdorf a range of different focal points for a stay. The history of the castle ruins dates back to the mid-11th century. Press houses and underground cellars shape the built landscape of the Oagossn; the wine trail and hiking routes offer other points of interest. You can therefore plan your time according to your interest in architectural history, winegrowing or the landscape, without having to follow a fixed itinerary.

Castle Ruins, Anabaptist Museum and Parish Church

A small museum about the Anabaptist movement is housed in the Täufergwölb of the castle ruins. The ruins thus bring both their long history and a specific aspect of the region’s past into focus. The parish church adds another perspective on the area’s history, with several phases of construction: it acquired its present form in the second half of the 17th century in the Early Baroque style; its tower dates from a late Romanesque and Gothic building period.

The church also houses a Gothic sandstone Madonna, created around 1400 and belonging to the type known as the Beautiful Madonnas. The building’s history and this artwork offer two different starting points if you are interested in sacred art and architecture. Check the visitor information again before you travel.

The Oagossn and Falkenstein’s Winegrowing History

The Falkenstein Kellergasse, also known as the “Oagossn”, consists of two rows of cellars facing each other, with a total of 65 press houses and adjoining underground cellars. The original form of the press houses, most of which date from the 19th century, has been preserved. The Oagossn illustrates the architectural side of winegrowing; the former regulation of vineyard affairs is part of its history.

From the 13th to the 18th century, the Falkenstein Berggericht was the highest judicial authority for vineyard matters and the proceeds they generated. An annual event in the Oagossn is the “Wein-Kunst-Kultur” wine harvest festival, held on the third weekend in September. If you are planning to attend, check the current programme before you travel.

Wine Knowledge and Trails Through the Landscape

The Falkenstein wine trail was established in 1975 as Austria’s first wine trail. It presents the history of winegrowing, working techniques, and information about the climate and soils. The well-marked Weinwanderpark, by contrast, focuses on the landscapes described along the route: it passes through oak forests and meadows, past fields and vineyards, and over limestone cliffs with rare dry-grassland vegetation. Depending on your interests, you can choose either a route offering more context about winegrowing or one that takes in a variety of landscapes.

The “Kleiner Falkenflug” features 25 stations on limestone rocks, inscribed with stories told by the falcon. The two routes of the »tut gut« hiking trail also have their own highlights: Route 1 includes Falkenstein Castle Ruins and the Anabaptist Museum. As of August 2026, Route 2 passes through the “Oagossn” Kellergasse, the vineyard maze, a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Falkenstein and the 425-metre-high Galgenberg; it then returns to the town hall.

The Way of St James and Getting Here

A stage description updated on 26 August 2026 takes the Weinviertel Way of St James out of Falkenstein via the “Oagossn” and through the Falkenstein Forest towards Poysdorf. This section includes the shady Lourdes Grotto and the Bründlquelle spring, both suitable places to take a break. Check the route conditions before setting out.

The Kreuzberg rises immediately beside Falkenstein as a distinctive rocky hill. You can reach Falkenstein by car either via Laa/Thaya or via Poysdorf; check road connections before you set off. The named routes, historic sites and travel options give you concrete starting points for planning your stay around your interests.
