More than two millennia of history shape the historic centre of Évora. At the same time, discoveries in Évora range from urban architecture to megalithic monuments, marble, pottery and the Alqueva Reservoir. These different scales give a trip its own rhythm: you can explore historic streets on foot, view archaeological remains and discover the region’s cultural and scenic sides.

City history and megalithic monuments

The urban landscape of Évora’s historic centre is a unique place to understand the influence of Portuguese architecture in Brazil. More than two millennia of history provide the setting. The best way to explore Évora is on foot: narrow streets are lined with whitewashed houses. Broad pedestrian streets and central corridors paved with granite slabs make it easier to get around the historic centre. This brings together the city’s long history and the experience of moving through its streets.

Archaeological remains also reveal different scales. The Cromeleque dos Perdigões consists of six menhirs erected between the beginning of the 4th millennium and the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. In the area around Reguengos de Monsaraz, the megalithic landscape includes 276 monuments and is one of the largest groups of its kind in Europe. The named ensemble itself and the large number of monuments across the wider area offer two perspectives on the megalithic past.

Alqueva and a view of the night sky

A variety of activities come together at the Alqueva Reservoir. Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz is described as the first river beach at the reservoir and holds the Blue Flag and Praia + Acessível awards. If these certifications matter for your current plans, check their status before visiting. Water sports and boat trips are also available on the reservoir shore in the Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz. The river beach and the activities along the shore offer different ways to enjoy a stay at Alqueva.

The night sky over Monsaraz offers a different focus. A municipal description of OLA – Observatório do Lago Alqueva, updated in May 2023, lists guided walks with telescope observations of star clusters, nebulae and distant galaxies. It also lists astronomy and astrophotography courses, as well as public talks. Check the current schedules before making specific plans.

Crafts, marble and fortress architecture

A municipal description, updated in June 2023, calls São Pedro do Corval Portugal’s largest pottery centre and notes that more than two dozen pottery workshops operate there year-round. It also explains that visitors can watch master potters shape clay on the wheel and learn about their knowledge and experience. This makes the place tangible not only through the number of its workshops, but also through the craft itself.

In Vila Viçosa, the Paço Ducal reveals another side of regional architecture. Its 110-metre-long façade is in the Mannerist style and is entirely clad in local marble. Visitors can see collections of paintings, sculptures, furniture, tapestries, ceramics and goldsmiths’ work. The Museu do Mármore complements this perspective with its focus on Portuguese marble and the extraction and processing of this natural stone. Representative architecture and the material itself thus come together under one theme.

The Fortaleza de Juromenha stands above the River Guadiana. It preserves traces of Roman settlement as well as parts of an Arab defensive structure. These include a wall, a gate and towers made of Islamic rammed earth. The site therefore brings together several specific architectural features and traces from different periods.

Regional cuisine and more to discover

The Fluviário de Mora is considered Europe’s first large freshwater aquarium. It combines scientific, cultural and leisure functions with an educational and environmental mission. This focus differs from the historic buildings and craft sites, adding a connection between leisure and environmental education to the trip.

Traditional dishes from the area around Reguengos de Monsaraz include Açorda alentejana, Migas, Silarcas, Favada and Ensopado de borrego. The Museu do Fresco hosts annual thematic exhibitions on the region’s history and culture; check exhibition dates before visiting, as programmes may change. The museum building was the most distinguished and representative civil building in old Monsaraz. Cuisine, exhibitions and architecture thus offer further ways to discover the region’s cultural characteristics.
