Viana do Alentejo brings together Alcáçovas’ cowbell-making tradition, historic buildings and routes through different places in the municipality. There are also recurring festivals in Aguiar and around Nossa Senhora D’Aires. When planning a cultural getaway focused on discovery, it helps to distinguish between these themes: craftsmanship and architecture form one focus, while routes and event dates form another.

Craftsmanship and architecture

UNESCO describes Alcáçovas as Portugal’s most important cowbell-making centre. On 1 December 2015, this craft was added to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. The Médico de Sousa pottery school is also part of the town’s craft tradition: it made pottery knowledge and training available to anyone who wanted to learn.

Viana do Alentejo has a different cultural focus. Art historians consider the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Anunciação an almost perfect example of late Gothic Alentejo architecture. It brings together late Gothic, Italian Renaissance and Mudéjar elements. The Paço dos Henriques is associated with the signing of the Treaty of Alcáçovas–Toledo on 4 September 1479 between the Catholic Monarchs and D. Afonso V.

The architectural complex of the Paço also includes the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the Jardim das Conchas. Together, they are considered a distinctive example of the Alentejo’s cultural diversity. The garden features around 26 species of seashell, as well as tiles, glass elements and a water system. The Castelo de Viana do Alentejo complex comprises the walled enclosure, the Igreja Matriz, the Igreja da Misericórdia, the Capela de Santo António and the former Capela de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, which now serves as an interpretation centre for the complex. The Castelo consists of five lines of walls with cylindrical corner towers. The structure at the top of the main tower is higher than the others and houses a bell with openings on all sides.

Routes, landscape and archaeological sites

The Caminho Nascente passes through Aguiar and Viana do Alentejo. It connects the municipality with Évora and Alvito and links Baixo Alentejo with Alto Alentejo. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora D’Aires is also mentioned as a stop along the route. Another clearly defined option is the Rota da Peregrinação a Nossa Senhora D’Aires: the 9.1-kilometre route passes through Viana do Alentejo and showcases the town’s historical, cultural and natural heritage. This includes the green marble from former quarries, which is presented along the route.

Walkers use the Circuito de Manutenção at Quinta da Joana throughout the year. Aguiar is also home to the Anta do Zambujeiro, a Neolithic collective burial monument. It is considered one of the oldest constructed traces of human presence in the municipality of Viana do Alentejo. The chamber’s supporting stones appear to be preserved, and there may be evidence of a corridor. This cautious assessment forms part of the picture of the site and distinguishes established description from archaeological interpretation.

Festivals and when to visit

The Romaria a Cavalo connects Moita and Viana do Alentejo in a four-day procession covering around 150 kilometres and reaching the Santuário de Nossa Senhora D’Aires. Aguiar hosts the Festa da Primavera in June; its programme includes dance, music, popular music and evening dances. The Feira Franca de Nossa Senhora D’Aires takes place on the last weekend in September.

When looking for a holiday rental in Viana do Alentejo, your preferred focus can help guide you: Alcáçovas is known for its cowbell tradition, Aguiar for the Anta and the June festival, and Viana do Alentejo for its architecture and the Rota da Peregrinação.
