Those who want to get to know Arraiolos can start with its carpet art. Tapetes de Arraiolos are made by hand in the town. According to the municipality, their production dates back to a time before the 15th century; the earliest reference cited there is from 1598. Craftsmanship and history also meet in public cultural landmarks and an exceptionally large carpet project.

Carpet art in the town and its history

The Monumento Ă  Tapeteira was inaugurated on 23 December 2001 and honours the historical importance of the craft associated with Arraiolos. Its design includes a mosaic suggesting an Arraiolos carpet and a ceramic panel depicting the work of the women who embroider the carpets. This makes the textile craft visible not only through the finished pattern, but also through the people who create it.

A large-scale example is “O Maior Tapete de Arraiolos feito em Arraiolos”: the carpet measures 120 mÂČ and comprises more than 4.5 million stitches. Local carpet embroiderers stitched it based on a 17th-century Arraiolos embroidery piece in the collection of the Museu Nacional Machado de Castro. Its size, handwork and historical model each give the project a distinct connection to the carpet tradition.

“O Tapete está na Rua”, a cultural initiative organised by the municipality of Arraiolos, also connects craftsmanship with other aspects of the town. The programme includes performances, exhibitions, colloquia and debates, as well as a special exhibition of Tapetes de Arraiolos. The historic centre also showcases crafts, gastronomy and other local products from Arraiolos. Dates and individual programme items may vary, so check the latest event information before your trip.

Monuments from different eras

Castelo de Arraiolos stands on Monte de São Pedro, a regularly conical hill with gentle slopes north of the present-day town. Designated a National Monument, it comprises the walls of the former settlement and the Paços dos Alcaides. With its regularly conical shape and gentle slopes, Monte de São Pedro defines the setting of the castle.

The Anta da Vila de Arraiolos reveals another long stretch of history. It was built between the 4th and 3rd millennia BC on a slope of the Arraiolos high ground, facing the basin of the Rio Almançor. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. Later, in 1527, the Convento dos Lóios was founded and dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção. The Igreja do Salvador adds to the picture with a 16th-century church that includes paintings.

Hiking and experiencing the landscape

The PR1 Entre Pontos e Colinas de Arraiolos is an 8.5 km circular walking route, with an estimated duration of 2 to 2.5 hours. Its surfaces alternate between compacted-earth paths, sections of asphalt and an Ecopista on a former railway line. When planning, take account of both the time required and the different trail surfaces. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

The landscapes along the route are habitats for resident birds of prey. The species listed include Águia-d’asa-redonda, Peneireiro-cinzento, Milhafre-real, Milhafre-preto, Águia-cobreira and Águia-calçada.

On a broader regional scale, the Grande Rota do Montado project includes Arraiolos as one of nine municipalities in Alentejo Central. It is planned as a network of more than 1,100 km of walking and cycling routes across the region. Implementation and availability may evolve. For Arraiolos, this wider perspective connects walking and cycling routes beyond the town, without equating the PR1 with the entire regional network.

Local cuisine and a landmark in the square

The Empada de Arraiolos is also part of the town’s local character: it is regarded as a valued and sought-after product with historical and cultural significance. Together with the gastronomy featured alongside crafts and other local products at “O Tapete está na Rua”, it adds a culinary perspective to the textile tradition.

At Praça do Município, visitors can see a 3D representation of the square’s historical development from the 13th century to the present day. As the installation’s availability may change, it is advisable to check before visiting. Work on the municipality-supported Centro Interpretativo do Tapete de Arraiolos project began at the same Praça on 4 July 2011, in the building of the former GNR post. Check current access arrangements separately if you plan to visit the centre today.
