The Fluviário de Mora is dedicated to a world that often goes unnoticed when travelling: freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity. In Pavia, a megalithic burial chamber and an interactive museum tell stories of a distant past; in Brotas, pottery and religious heritage take centre stage. Nature observations and cultural sites offer complementary perspectives.
Freshwater Worlds and Megaliths
The public Fluviário de Mora presents freshwater species from Portugal along the course of a river, from its source to its mouth. It also features species from the Iberian Peninsula, the Amazon Basin, the African Rift Lakes and Asia. If you are interested not only in the exhibition but also in the work behind it, you can plan an aquarist experience that includes behind-the-scenes access and insights into aquarium maintenance. Activity details may change; check them in advance.
The Museu Interativo do Megalitismo de Mora uses a 3D film and interactive tables to introduce visitors to life in a Neolithic village, archaeological objects and excavation methods. It is housed in a complex that incorporates the renovated former Mora railway station.
In Pavia stands the Anta-Capela de São Dinis: the megalithic chamber was built in the town centre between the 4th and 3rd millennia BC. In the Middle Ages, it was converted into a Catholic temple and dedicated to São Dinis. The Anta has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. Visits must be arranged in advance with the Junta de Freguesia de Pavia or the Mora municipal tourist office.
Churches, Art and Craftsmanship
In Mora, the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Graça dates from 1570, and its baptismal font from the late 16th century. The Igreja da Misericórdia houses a mural of Nossa Senhora do Manto and a Renaissance marble basin. Here, too, visits must be arranged in advance with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Mora or the municipal tourist office.
In Brotas, vernacular religious architecture, along with Manueline and Baroque elements, defines the Igreja Matriz, also known as the Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Brotas. Devotion to Nossa Senhora de Brotas dates back to the 15th century. Tiles inside the church, in the sacristy and on the outside of the narthex were conserved and restored in 2002–2003. The Torre das Águias, one of the region’s most significant examples of Manueline towers, has also been a National Monument since 1910. It is located in the village of Águias, near the River Divor and the Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Brotas.
Olaria das Brotas continues a pottery tradition that is several centuries old; the village once had around 40 potters. Visitor activities include making pottery on a wheel, decorating clay objects and taking guided tours. The Casa-Museu Manuel Ribeiro de Pavia displays paintings, original drawings, reproductions and illustrated books from the life and work of the artist.
The Casa da Cultura de Mora offers another window onto local cultural life. The former hospice was converted into a cultural centre in 1987; it includes a library, exhibition gallery, cinema-theatre, music school, municipal dance school and decorative arts classes. The Núcleo Museológico Agro-Florestal da Barroca presents permanent and temporary exhibitions about agricultural life in Mora; the content of temporary exhibitions may change.
Trails and Nature Observation
The Passadiço/Percurso do Gameiro comprises a 2,930-metre riverside area: 1,500 metres of it is a wooden boardwalk, and 1,430 metres is a walking trail. It also includes a 2,570-metre Montado area. Along the route, you can discover riverside pastures, poplars, amphibians, small fish and regional bird species; a birdwatching point provides an opportunity to observe birds. The different distances can help you plan how to divide your time among the trail sections.
The Mata Nacional de Cabeção is part of the Natura 2000 network and covers more than 258 hectares. Its habitats are used by herons, white and black storks, waterbirds, and both diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey. The Miradouro de Mora offers views of irrigated fields, streams and diverse wild flora and fauna. The Azenhas da Seda, meanwhile, combine historic watermills with rapids and waterfalls.
For navigation along the Rota da Estrada Nacional 2: within the municipality of Mora, it runs between kilometre 468 and kilometre 493, passing through Mora and Brotas. At kilometre 474, a two-kilometre detour leads to the Parque Ecológico do Gameiro. The Ecopista de Mora starts at kilometre 475, next to the EN2.
Local Experiences and Dates
The annual Mostra Gastronómica da Caça is organised by the Câmara Municipal de Mora in close collaboration with local restaurants. If you are planning to attend, check the dates and participating restaurants: both may change from year to year. On the “Vista o Fato de Apicultor” experience, you visit an apiary, collect honey and bottle some to take home. Visitor activities at Adega Encosta do Pinhal are available year-round; confirm the schedules before your visit.
